After Thursday's rainout, the Orioles and New York Yankees look to get their series going tonight at Camden Yards. It is now a rain-shortened three-game series and the rainout will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on July 9 at 4:05 p.m.
Both clubs just pushed their starters back a day. So Andrew Cashner (2-6, 5.07 ERA) faces Sonny Gray (3-4, 5.98 ERA) tonight. On Saturday afternoon, the scheduled starters are Kevin Gausman (3-4, 4.31 ERA) and Masahiro Tanaka (6-2, 4.62 ERA). On Sunday, Alex Cobb (1-7, 6.80 ERA) is expected to pitch against Domingo Germán (0-3, 5.45).
The Yankees are 35-17 and have matched their season-high by going 18 games over .500. They are 24-2 when their starter pitches at least six innings. While they have gone 11-9 versus American League East teams, they are 24-8 versus everyone else. Through Wednesday's games, the Yankees led the majors in runs per game (5.64), homers (87), OPS (.804) and walks (217).
The Orioles won the only previous series these teams played in 2018, taking three of four at Yankee Stadium from April 5-8. That was newsworthy since the Orioles were just 2-8 in that ballpark last year and gave up an average of 10.2 runs per game. In that April series, Baltimore outscored New York 23-20.
Can Orioles pitchers again hold down the dangerous duo of Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton? In the April series, they combined to hit .194 (7-for-36) with 13 strikeouts and left 20 runners on base. Stanton went 2-for-19 with a pair of singles and eight strikeouts. Judge went 5-for-17 with a homer and four RBIs. Manny Machado went 7-for-19 (.368) in that series with two homers and five RBIs. For the four games, O's pitching held New York to a .245 team average and two home runs.
The Mullins man: A move that has been anticipated for a few days is expected to be made official later today. Outfielder Cedric Mullins is getting a promotion from Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk. Mullins will leave Bowie on a hot streak, as he's hit .398 his past 21 games with a homer, 18 runs, seven steals and 12 RBIs.
A 13th-round draft pick in 2013 out of Campbell University, the switch-hitter is batting .313/.362/.512 in 49 Bowie games with 12 doubles, five triples, six homers, 28 RBIs and an OPS of .875.
Mullins this year proved capable of hitting both left- and right-handed pitching. He is batting .300 with an OPS of .842 against lefties and .317/.882 versus right-handers. In May, he hit .368 with an OPS of .938.
Olson at the draft: The Orioles will be represented on Monday at the First-Year Player Draft by director of baseball operations Tripp Norton and former Orioles right-hander Gregg Olson. Olson was selected by the Orioles in the first round with the fourth overall selection of the 1988 draft out of Auburn University. In six years with the O's, Olson pitched to a 17-21 record with a 2.26 ERA over 320 games in relief. The 1989 AL Rookie of the Year, Olson is the Orioles' all-time saves leader with 160. Zach Britton is second with 135.
The Orioles have the No. 11 pick in round one of the draft, which begins at 7 p.m. Monday. The club holds the No. 37 pick, which comes during Competitive Balance Round A. The Orioles lost their second-round pick for signing Cobb. They will select No. 87 overall in round three. The club's top pick last year was prep lefty DL Hall, taken No. 21 overall.
