The Orioles have named their minor league managers and coaching staffs for the 2016 season.
Ron Johnson returns for his fifth season as manager at Triple-A Norfolk after guiding the Tides to the International League South Division title and earning Manager of the Year honors in 2015. The 2016 season will be Johnson's 23rd as a minor league manager. He has compiled 1,555 career victories (1,555-1,544 overall) and became the winningest manager in Tides franchise history last season, going 294-282 over his first four seasons with the club.
Mike Griffin will serve as pitching coach for the ninth consecutive season in the organization and eighth straight season in Norfolk. Sean Berry will serve as hitting coach for the Tides in his second season and Jose Hernandez will serve as field coach for Norfolk for the fourth straight season. Mark Shires enters his 18th year as an athletic trainer in the O's system and his 10th year at Norfolk, and Trevor Howell will return for his fifth season in the Orioles system and third as the strength and conditioning coach for the Tides.
Gary Kendall will return for his sixth season as manager at Double-A Bowie after leading the club to its first Eastern League championship in 2015. This season will be Kendall's 17th season in the organization and 13th season as a manager. Former Oriole Alan Mills begins his fifth season as a pitching coach in the organization and second straight at Bowie. Howie Clark enters his first season as hitting coach with the Baysox and his second in the organization. Shawn McGill will serve as field coach for the Baysox after six seasons between 2006-2013 as a catcher and outfielder in the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves organizations. Pat Wesley begins his 13th full season as an athletic trainer in the Orioles organization, and strength and conditioning coach Pat Armstrong returns for his seventh year in the organization and fifth at Bowie.
After serving as Bowie's hitting coach last year, Keith Bodie moves to manage at Single-A Frederick. Bodie spent 16 seasons with the Houston organization, including a three-year stint (2012-14) as manager of Double-A Corpus Christi. Kennie Steenstra will serve as pitching coach, returning for his fifth season with the Keys and his 12th in the organization. Former major leaguer Erik Pappas enters his first season as hitting coach with the Keys after two seasons as the hitting coach for Double-A Springfield in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Brian Guzman will serve as the athletic trainer with Frederick and Chris Cecere is the Keys' strength and conditioning coach.
Former Orioles third baseman Ryan Minor, who managed Single-A Delmarva from 2010-12, will return to manage the Shorebirds for the third straight season after piloting the Frederick Keys in 2013. The 2016 season will be Minor's ninth as a coach or manager in the organization. Entering his 11th year in the Orioles organization (six with Frederick and two with Bowie), Blaine Beatty will be the pitching coach for the third year with the Shorebirds. Former Orioles farmhand Kyle Moore enters his first season as hitting coach for Delmarva. Trek Schuler returns to the Shorebirds, where he spent the 2001-03 seasons, for his third straight season with Delmarva and 17th season as an athletic trainer in the O's organization.
Longtime major league coach Luis Pujols will manage the short-season Single-A Aberdeen IronBirds for the second straight season after managing Frederick in 2014 and Delmarva in 2013. Pujols will be joined by pitching coach Justin Lord, who returns for his third season with the IronBirds. Scott Beerer will enter his first season as hitting coach for Aberdeen, beginning in June, in addition to his duties as Orioles minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator. After serving seven seasons with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Orioles, including four seasons as the club's manager (2009-12) and the previous three seasons as field coach, Ramon Sambo joins the Aberdeen staff as field coach. Marty Brinker will serve as the athletic trainer with the IronBirds and Kevin Clark is Aberdeen's strength and conditioning coach after serving in the same role with Delmarva in 2015.
After managing Frederick in 2015, Orlando Gomez returns to the GCL Orioles. Gomez managed the GCL Orioles from 2013-14 and is in his 12th season in the organization (ninth as a manager). Former big leaguer Wilson Alvarez returns for a fourth season as pitching coach for the GCL Orioles. After serving as minor league infield coordinator for the O's in 2015, Kevin Bradshaw joins the GCL staff as field coach, and Milt May returns for his seventh season as hitting coach.
Elvis Morel and Nelson Norman will manage the Orioles' two entries in the Rookie-level Dominican Summer League. They will be assisted by pitching coaches Robert Perez and Dionis Pascual and coaches Benny Adames (hitting), Ramon Caraballo (field supervisor), Ramon Lubo (catching) and Ruben Francisco (field coach). Ludovino Marte will serve as athletic trainer, while Anthony Adames will serve as strength and conditioning coach.
Brian Graham enters his ninth season with the Orioles and fourth as director of player development. Rick Peterson will return for his fifth season as director of pitching development and Jeff Manto returns for his third year as minor league hitting coordinator.
Don Werner will serve as the minor league catching coordinator, while Dave Anderson will serve as the infield coordinator and Beerer as the outfield and baserunning coordinator along with his duties at Aberdeen. Scott McGregor will spend his 15th year as a coach in the organization and fifth season as the Sarasota-based rehabilitation coordinator. Dave Schmidt, in his 19th season in the organization, will serve as the Florida and Latin America pitching coordinator.
B.J. Surhoff, Mike Bordick and Ramon Martinez return as special assignment instructors for the Orioles. In addition to his managerial duties, Norman remains the director of Dominican baseball operations for the Birds, while Felipe Alou Jr. returns as director of the Dominican academy for the second consecutive season after seven years as coordinator of Dominican operations. Len Johnston enters his 40th season with the Orioles organization, serving as the administrator for Sarasota operations. Dave Walker will begin his 14th year as minor league medical coordinator and 23rd season in the Orioles farm system. Ryan Driscoll returns for his third year as strength and conditioning coordinator, Sarasota and his eighth year in the organization.
