Orioles claim Scott off waivers and DFA Gilmartin

The Orioles have made another move this afternoon by claiming right-hander Tayler Scott off waivers from the Mariners and optioning him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Left-hander Sean Gilmartin was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster.

Scott, the first pitcher from South Africa to play in the majors, is a 27-year-old rookie who served as the Mariners' opener Thursday against the Orioles. He walked the bases loaded in two-thirds of an inning.

In five appearances, Scott has registered a 9.39 ERA and 2.217 WHIP in 7 2/3 innings. He allowed eight earned runs and 10 total with 11 hits and six walks.

Jimmy Yacabonis gets his second opportunity to serve as the opener tonight after tossing two scoreless innings in Oakland. He also pitched an inning in relief Saturday in Seattle and struck out the side.

Padres rookie left-hander Logan Allen made his major league debut June 18 against the Brewers and allowed three hits over seven scoreless inning. The Orioles represent his second opponent.

Allen made 13 starts with Triple-A El Paso and registered a 5.15 ERA and 1.439 WHIP in 57 2/3 innings. He averaged 9.8 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Red Sox drafted Allen in the eighth round in 2015 out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. and included him in the package sent to San Diego later that year for closer Craig Kimbrel.

Manny Machado returns to Camden Yards tonight, in case anyone has somehow missed that news. He's 2-for-2 with a double and home run against Miguel Castro, the at-bats coming in 2015.

He's also 3-for-8 against Andrew Cashner, who isn't starting in this series.
