"Orioles Classics" #TBT: It's never too late

Are you enjoying the baseball playoffs? Who are you rooting for to advance to the World Series? Personally, I think an Astros-Brewers Fall Classic would be just dandy, a perfect blend of pitching prowess and offensive fireworks. Best of all, in my scenario, there are no rainouts because both teams play in facilities capable of closed roofs to protect from the elements.

Plus, who doesn't love frenetic Astros mascot Orbit or the Famous Racing Sausages in Milwaukee?

To get you ready for the last meaningful major league games before spring training, we're throwing it back to a six-pack of "Orioles Classics" this week. The most common theme for this week's retro reviews? It's never too late - as in innings, often past the routine nine.

Thursday, Oct. 18, 12:30 p.m. - The Orioles were trailing the White Sox 4-3 in the bottom of the ninth on June 23, 2014. Steve Pearce started the O's last gasp with a single to center off reliever Ronald Belisario, who then plunked Adam Jones to put two runners on base. With one out, pinch-hitter Chris Davis stepped to the plate and crushed a three-run walk-off home run for a 6-4 victory.

Friday, Oct. 19, 9 a.m. - Late-inning heroics go perfectly with corn flakes, scrambled eggs or whatever you prefer for breakfast. So brew a pot of coffee, squeeze some orange juice and enjoy this interleague game from Sept. 23, 2016. Matt Wieters led off the home ninth with a home run off Daniel Hudson, sending the game to extra innings in a 2-all tie. It stayed that way until the bottom of the 12th, when Mark Trumbo sent the home fans home happy with a walk-off blast to left field.

Friday, Oct. 19, 7:30 p.m. - After a couple of late rallies, how about some O's action from late in the season? And by late in the season, we mean about as late as you can go: the World Series, when the Birds traveled up Interstate 95 to battle the Phillies in 1983. In Game 3, a two-run seventh - featuring pinch-hitter Benny Ayala's game-tying RBI single against future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton - turned the tide in a 3-2 Baltimore victory. The decisive run scored on an error by shortstop Ivan de Jesus that plated Ayala.

Monday, Oct. 22, noon - The Nationals held a 4-2 lead over the O's at Camden Yards entering the bottom of the ninth in this May 9, 2017 edition of the Battle of the Beltways. But the Orioles rallied against lefty Enny Romero, Jonathan Schoop doubling home Trumbo and J.J. Hardy's single plating pinch-runner Craig Gentry for a 4-4 tie. The standoff stood until the 12th, when the Orioles loaded the bases with one out and Trumbo stroked a walk-off single to left for a 5-4 win.

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 9 a.m. - Maybe Wheaties is your breakfast cereal of choice. But you'll definitely cheer for Wieters, whose walk-off homer leading off the 11th inning provided the margin of victory in a 2-1 triumph over the Braves on July 27, 2015.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 1 p.m. - Our last "Orioles Classic" offering this week offers abundant longballs - six of 'em, to be exact. The O's blasted off early and often against the A's on May 8, 2016. Talk about a happy Mother's Day! Manny Machado went deep twice, with Pedro Álvarez, Trumbo, Schoop and Joey Rickard also connecting in the 11-3 romp.
