Orioles move Rutschman and Hall to Triple-A, claim Allen on waivers

Catcher Adley Rutschman and left-hander DL Hall made brief stops at Double-A Bowie before heading to the next level.

Rutschman and Hall are joining Triple-A Norfolk Friday in Nashville. Rutschman is scheduled to be in the lineup.

Hall, the No. 5 prospect in the system per MLBPipeline.com, made his only start with the Baysox this morning and was charged with two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked one batter, struck out six and again flashed a fastball clocked at 100 mph.

The Orioles kept Hall at extended spring training and assigned him to high Single-A Aberdeen for one start. Hall made seven starts with the Baysox last summer before sustaining a stress reaction in his left elbow.

Rutschman, the top prospect in baseball, is back with the Tides after straining his right triceps early in camp. He went 2-for-4 today and is 11-for-25 with five doubles since leaving Sarasota.

The duo joins Grayson Rodriguez, the organization’s top pitching prospect.

The Orioles claimed left-hander Logan Allen off waivers today from the Guardians, filling a 40-man roster that had a vacancy after infielder Kelvin Gutiérrez was designated for assignment.

Allen, 24, has registered a 5.80 ERA and 1.637 WHIP in parts of four seasons with the Padres and Cleveland. He’s made 30 appearances, half of them starts, and averaged 3.8 walks, 6.4 strikeouts and 1.6 home runs allowed per nine innings.

The Red Sox drafted Allen in the eighth round in 2015 out of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and traded him to San Diego five months later as part of the deal for reliever Craig Kimbrel.

The Indians got him in July 2019 as part of a three-team trade that included the Reds and involved Trevor Bauer, Yasiel Puig and Franmil Reyes.

Allen, who won’t be on the active roster tonight, is 31-27 with a 3.77 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 106 minor league games and has averaged 9.4 strikeouts and 0.7 home runs per nine innings. He’s made 99 starts.

The Guardians designated Allen for assignment on Sunday while trimming their roster to 26 players. He allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings.

MLBPipeline.com ranked Allen, who’s out of minor league options, as the No. 74 prospect in baseball in 2019.

The Orioles close out a four-game series against the Twins tonight.

Ryan Mountcastle had two hits and an RBI last night after going 2-for-15 in his last four games and 5-for-28 in his last seven.

Anthony Santander has reached base in 24 of 25 games.

Cedric Mullins is 8-for-23 (.348) with three doubles and a home run during a five-game hitting streak.

Trey Mancini’s three infield hits last night were a career high. He has four in the past two games.

Spenser Watkins is making his fifth start. He’s allowed five earned runs (eight total) and 14 hits in 17 2/3 innings.

The Orioles hit multiple home runs in an inning last night for the first time since Oct. 1 in Toronto.

Left-hander Cionel Pérez’s win last night was his first since April 9, 2021 in Arizona. Pérez hasn’t allowed a run in nine innings over his 10 appearances.

In his first season with the Twins, Chris Archer has allowed five runs and 11 hits with nine walks in 15 1/3 innings. He hasn’t gone more than 4 1/3 innings.

The former Rays right-hander has made 21 career appearances against the Orioles and gone 6-10 with a 5.05 ERA and 1.453 WHIP in 117 2/3 innings.

Mancini is 5-for-17 (.294) with two doubles against Archer. Rougned Odor is 2-for-13 with five strikeouts. Santander is 3-for-8.
