When the Orioles traded relievers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Dec. 6 for third baseman Mark Reynolds, they also were supposed to receive a player to be named later.
It's later. And he's been named.
The Orioles also have received catcher John Hester, who was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk.
Hester, a 13th-round pick out of Stanford in the 2006 draft, is batting .263 with three doubles, one homer and five RBIs in 10 games with Triple-A Reno. He's thrown out 29 percent of runners attempting to steal in his 300 career minor league games.
Hester, 27, is a career .220 hitter in 53 games with the Diamondbacks in 2009 and 2010. He hit a two-run homer in his first major league at-bat on Aug. 28, 2009 against the Astros.
Hester batted .328 in 92 games with Reno in 2009 and .370 in 37 games with Reno last year. He's 6-foot-4, 228 pounds and hits from the right side. He enjoys long walks in the rain and...never mind. That's probably more information than you needed.
