Ten batters into tonight's start and it became apparent that relief would come to Dylan Bundy only via the weather or the bullpen.
Bundy surrendered three home runs and fell behind by five runs before the latest storm hammered the Baltimore area. The game finally was postponed after a delay lasting 2 hours, 33 minutes, also washing away the statistics.
The makeup date will be announced shortly. The teams have a mutual off-day on Aug. 13 after concluding their series at Camden Yards.
Bundy has allowed 23 home runs this season, second in the majors behind the Royals' Jakob Junis (24) in two fewer starts. The rain prevented his total from rising to 26.
Andrew Benintendi and J.D. Martinez homered in succession in the first inning, the second time in two nights that the Red Sox went back-to-back and the fifth time this season.
An error and walk in the second inning put Bundy in a jam and Mookie Betts launched a three-run shot with two outs to increase the lead to 5-0.
Bundy missed with a changeup to Benintendi to fall behind in the count and the grounds crew again had to unroll the tarp as fans raced up the aisles to seek cover.
Four rain delays in three games on the homestand. Each giveaway should include a giant umbrella and rubber pants.
The Orioles endured their sixth rainout this season.
Bundy had allowed 15 earned runs (16 total) and five home runs in 12 1/3 innings in three starts since coming off the disabled list. The three runs attached to Betts' swing tonight would have been unearned. He threw 30 pitches, 18 for strikes.
None of it counted.
Left fielder Trey Mancini was charged with an error that's also erased while trying to make a basket catch of Rafael Devers' fly ball. Third baseman Renato Núñez raced back for the ball and peeled off at the last instant, creating a situation that handcuffed Mancini.
Sandy Leon walked, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a broken-bat liner to Chris Davis and Betts jumped on the next pitch, a 90 mph fastball, for what would have been his 25th home run of the season.
Left-hander David Price retired the side in order in the first inning with two strikeouts and waited out the storm. A deluge already hit Bundy before the first drop of rain.
More details to come, including whether the rotation for the upcoming Rays series is influenced by the postponement.
Update: The starters for the Rays series are listed as Alex Cobb, Andrew Cashner, Kevin Gausman and TBD. Bundy could take Yefry RamÃrez's spot in the finale.
A makeup date still hasn't been decided and will be announced later tonight or Thursday.
Update II: Tongiht's game will be made up as part of a split separate admission doubleheader on Aug. 11. First game starts at 1:05 p.m. with the nightcap at 7:05 p.m.
