BRADENTON, Fla. – The Orioles made nine camp cuts this afternoon to bring the roster down to 48 players, including 12 invitees.
Pitchers Luis González and Kade Strowd were optioned to minor league camp. Pitchers Rodolfo Martinez, Dylan Coleman and Raúl Alcantara, outfielders Jordyn Adams and Franklin Barreto, infielder/outfielder Terrin Vavra, and catcher David Bañuelos were reassigned.
Players on the 40-man roster are optioned and the others reassigned.
None of the moves are classified as unexpected. The camp injuries didn’t open any doors.
Martinez was the talk of camp after his bullpen and live batting practice sessions, but he allowed nine runs and five hits with six walks in 3 2/3 innings. In yesterday’s split-squad game in Clearwater, he retired only two batters and was charged with three runs on three walks and two wild pitches. He threw only seven strikes among 24 pitches.
The Orioles added González to the 40-man roster in November to protect him in the Rule 5 Draft. He allowed two runs and two hits, both on solo homers, with three walks and four strikeouts in four innings.
Coleman surrendered two runs and four hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. The Orioles signed him on Feb. 10.
“Coleman’s got a huge arm,” manager Brandon Hyde said over the weekend. “The size, the arm. It’s about commanding the strike zone. You saw him get two quick outs there and then walk the third guy. If we can get him in the strike zone more … He’s pitched in the big leagues, we like his stuff. It’s all about command.”
Adams, the 17th overall pick by the Angels in the 2018 draft, went 2-for-11 with a double and four RBIs. Strowd allowed two unearned runs and two hits and walked five batters in 3 1/3 innings. Vavra, who re-signed with the Orioles, was 3-for-17 with a double. Baretto was 0-for-9 with six strikeouts. Alcantara made his lone appearance yesterday in Clearwater and allowed four runs in 1 1/3 innings.
Bañuelos, who received his only major league at-bat last season, was 1-for-11. The Orioles still have four catchers in camp – Adley Rutschman, Gary Sánchez, Samuel Basallo and Maverick Handley.
Coby Mayo isn't in tonight's Orioles lineup but he's making the trip to Bradenton.
Former Orioles outfielder DJ Stewart is in the Pirates lineup. He’s 8-for-22 this spring with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs.
