Orioles set rotation for Boston series (updated)

DETROIT - The Orioles have set their rotation for their upcoming three-game series with the Boston Red Sox that starts Monday night at Fenway Park.

Wade Miley (8-12, 5.49 ERA) is set to pitch Monday, with Dylan Bundy (8-5, 3.82 ERA) going Tuesday and Kevin Gausman (7-10, 3.61 ERA) starting on regular rest on Wednesday. Miley will be pitching on seven days rest and Bundy on five days of rest.

Right-hander Yovani Gallardo (5-7, 5.44 ERA) is now set to start on Thursday in the series opener at home versus Tampa Bay. His next start is being pushed back a few days. Since he last worked on Tuesday against Tampa Bay, it would have been tomorrow, but right-hander Chris Tillman re-enters the rotation then.

"Everything is kind of a moving target," manager Buck Showalter said today of his rotation. "Especially when Chris gets back, we have six to pick from."

Showalter was asked what he is looking for out of Tillman tomorrow, in what will be the veteran's first appearance since Aug. 20.

"Health," he said. "I expect him to be a little rusty. I think there is a lot of unknown there. More than anything, we'd just like for him to be healthy. Even if he has a rusty start, each one of them will get better. It's exciting for his teammates and for me to get him back."

The Orioles are getting closer to having right-hander Darren O'Day back for their bullpen. Showalter today said the Orioles are planning to have O'Day throw a simulated game on Tuesday in Boston after he has one more light throwing session.

O'Day has been on the disabled list since Aug. 12 with a right shoulder rotater cuff strain. He got a cortisone injection earlier for that discomfort. He was eligible to come off the DL on Aug. 27.

Right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez gets the start tonight for the Orioles, as they try to even up this series. Jimenez has pitched to an ERA of 2.70 his last four starts. Showalter was asked about his improvement today.

"Command. Strikes. Good fastball. His command has been good and he's had a lot of counts in his favor. And when he does get them, he doesn't get back to 3-2, he finishes off the hitter. You see so many guys who have an advantage, they get 0-2, 1-2 and then lose the advantage that they have (by) throwing some uncompetitive pitches."

Has Jimenez made some mechanical changes?

"Not really. He has the type of delivery that, when everything is on time (he can do well). You don't want to take the unconventionality away from him, because it is part of his success. He's got a delivery that not many people use, but with it come some inconsistencies," Showalter said.

Showalter confirmed that left-hander Jayson Aquino is still on the active roster. Earlier, there had been some discussion about sending Aquino to work out with the group back in Sarasota, but that didn't happen.

As of about 40 minutes before tonight's schedule start time, the tarp is on the field and rain is falling at Comerica Park. According to weather.com, the chance of rain is 45 percent at 7 p.m., but goes down to between 10 and 15 percent for the rest of the night.

Updated: Tonight's game will start about 10 minutes later than planned. The Tigers announced moments ago that they are planning on a 7:20 p.m. first pitch.
