Orioles sign Jurrjens to minor league deal (with Duquette quote)

SARASOTA, Fla. - The Jair Jurrjens saga has reached its conclusion. The Orioles announced tonight that they signed Jurrjens to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. He's expected to report to camp Saturday. Jurrjens had agreed to a one-year contract worth $1.5 million, with another $2.5 million possible in incentives, but the announcement was put on hold for three weeks. Now comes word that he's receiving a minor league deal. The club apparently had issues with the results of his physical - specifically the condition of his right knee. Speculation mounted that the Orioles would attempt to work out a modified deal. Executive vice president Dan Duquette didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. Manager Buck Showalter told reporters that the Orioles had a jersey number waiting for Jurrjens, and Duquette said earlier today that it was "time to get it resolved." Jurrjens will compete for a spot in the rotation, joining a crowded field of fifth-starter candidates that includes Jake Arrieta, Zach Britton, Steve Johnson, Tommy Hunter, Brian Matusz and Rule 5 pick T.J McFarland. He could begin the season at Triple-A Norfolk. The Braves non-tendered Jurrjens after he went 3-4 with a 6.89 ERA in 11 games. He made the National League All-Star team in 2011, when he went 13-6 with a 2.96 ERA in 23 starts. The Braves paid Jurrjens $5.5 million last seasaon. Update: Duquette sent the following text message: "Jair Jurrjens has a good track record and is still young. We hope he can regain the form which made him an All-Star in 2011."
