Orioles string together singles to break tie (Davis homers)

So much for that scoreless tie in Oakland. Nate McLouth, Manny Machado, Nick Markakis and Adam Jones singled in succession to produce the game's first run in the top of the fourth inning. Chris Davis drove in two more runs with a double and Matt Wieters produced a sacrifice fly. The Orioles didn't knock out Oakland starter Bartolo Colon. They just peppered him with jabs. McLouth has reached base safely in 19 of his last 33 plate appearances. Over his last nine games, he's 12-for-26 with seven walks and 10 runs scored. Instant update: McLouth singled again in the fifth. He's now reached base in 20 of his last 34 plate appearances. Jones has a hit in 23 of 25 games this season. He's reached base in all except one. Davis is 13-for-36 in his last 11 games, with four doubles, two homers and eight RBIs. J.J. Hardy has six hits in his last five games, including the first one off Colon today, and his average climbed to .207 before he bounced to the mound in the fourth. You won't get a nosebleed at that level, but at least it's above .200. Miguel Gonzalez has allowed two hits in four scoreless innings, with no walks and four strikeouts. He's thrown 53 pitches, 36 for strikes. Can the Orioles post four straight quality starts in Oakland for the first time since Aug. 15, 2005-Sept. 1, 2006? Gonalez has won 11 games since making his first major league start on July 6, 2012. The only American League pitcher with more victories since that date is Doug Fister (12). Jered Weaver, Hiroki Kuroda, Max Scherzer and Alex Cobb also have 11. In his 11 road starts, Gonzalez is 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA and eight quality starts in 70 2/3 innings. Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie's Kevin Gausman allowed only one run in 7 2/3 innings and still got the loss. He permitted five hits, walked none and struck out eight. Gausman has walked one batter and struck out 29 in his five starts this season. Update II: Jones had an RBI double to give the Orioles a 5-0 lead, but Oakland scored four runs off Gonzalez in the sixth and knocked him out of the game with one out. Gonzalez surrendered five of his seven hits in the inning. He threw 40 pitches. He just totally lost it. Troy Patton got two big outs to leave the bases loaded and protect a one-run lead. The Orioles were trying to register four straight quality starts in Oakland for the first time since Aug. 15, 2005-Sept. 1, 2006. Update III: McLouth singled in the seventh, stole second base and scored on Machado's single. McLouth has three hits today and has scored three runs to raise his average to .342. He's reached base in 21 of last 35 plate appearances. He's quite a bargain at $2 million. Update IV: Seth Smith hit a two-run homer off Patton in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The lefty vs. lefty matchup didn't work in the Orioles' favor. That's the first home run allowed by Patton this season. Update V: Chris Davis homered in the eighth to break a 6-6 tie. Davis just flicked at an 0-2 pitch from A's left-hander Sean Doolittle. Freakish strength. Davis has 16 homers in his last 32 regular season games.
