Orioles trying to remain perfect at home (Machado homers)

Ramon Martinez is serving as Orioles pitching coach for the three-game series against the Blue Jays while Dave Wallace attends to a family matter.

Martinez is in his second season as special assignment pitching instructor.

The Orioles are the only team in the majors to remain unbeaten at home with a 5-0 record. The Nationals are 5-1 and the Royals are 4-1.

When does a team gain a psychological advantage?

"Think about it. If we go 81-0, I think that would be a pretty good one. Then we'd worry about losing our first one in the postseason. If we go 81-0, we might make the postseason.

"You want to feel like you've got an advantage at home. One of the biggest pressure games of the year is opening day at home. Geez. You don't want to disappoint."

The only disappointment for the Orioles was having their April 9 game postponed due to the bitter cold and a wintry mix. Otherwise, they've been the hottest team.

"It is something our guys want to feel good about," Showalter said. "You want to feel like you're at an advantage, but your advantage usually comes from how your starting pitcher does. It's pretty simple."

Mike Wright made it complicated tonight by issuing back-to-back walks to Justin Smoak and Russell Martin to load the bases with one out in the top of the second inning. Chris Davis made a diving stop of Ryan Goins' grounder up the line and recorded the out as Edwin Encarnacion scored to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.

Davis averages one dazzling play a night.

Encarnacion led off the inning with a sharp single into left field. The walks came against two Blue Jays batting .083 and .146, respectively.

Wright retired the side in order on 17 pitches in the first, recording outs with his curveball, 95 mph fastball and changeup. He threw 23 pitches in the second.

Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard led off the bottom of the first with a single into right field, but Manny Machado lined to right and Adam Jones bounced to the mound, where Marcus Stroman started a double play.

Update: Wright's at 62 pitches in three innings and he's behind 3-0.

It would be worse except Mark Trumbo threw out Troy Tulowitzki at the plate to end the third.

Tulowitzki doubled past a diving Rickard in left field with two out to score two runs. Michael Saunders led off with a double and Jose Bautista singled with one out.

Update II: Manny Machado homered into the Orioles' bullpen with one out in the fourth to reduce the lead to 3-1. He's tied with Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo for the team lead with five homers.
