Post-game notes: Garza and Rays top Orioles

With the 5-1 loss vs. Tampa Monday, the Orioles fall to 0-4 on this homestand and 1-6 on the year. They have lost four in a row since the season's only win, last Thursday vs. the Rays. It's the O's worst start since 2002. The Rays, who went 4-5 at the Yard last year, are 45-57 all-time at Camden Yards. He's pretty good: Tampa's Carl Crawford, who went just 2 for 10 vs. the O's last week, went 4 for 4 tonight with a double and solo homer. Winning pitcher Matt Garza gave up just one run over eight innings. In ten career starts vs. Baltimore he is 8-1, 2.48. No Guts, no Glory: Losing pitcher Jeremy Guthrie gave up three runs and eight hits over seven innings, throwing 105 pitches. He is 0-2, 4.05 in 13 1/3 innings in two starts in 2010, both vs. Tampa. Guthrie has recorded eight quality starts in 11 career starts vs. Tampa. Oriole starting pitchers have worked to an ERA of 3.89 through seven games to date. They have allowed 2 ER or less four times with four quality starts. Where was everyone? The crowd of 9,129 was the smallest attendance in the history of Camden Yards. The previous low crowd was 10,130 on May 26, 2009 vs. Toronto. The four-date attendance so far is 101,667. Left fielder Felix Pie gunned down Jason Bartlett at the plate in the top of the third. It was the O's second outfield assist of the season. Last year, Baltimore led the AL with 36 outfield assists. At bat, Pie went 2 for 3 tonight. He homered to lead off the bottom of the first, his first career leadoff homer. He hit a Matt Garza 1-0 pitch 392 feet to right center. Garrett Atkins went 0 for 4 tonight to snap a five-game batting streak. He was robbed of a hit by Carl Crawford's diving catch in left in the seventh inning. Adam Jones is 3 for 8 the last two games after an 0 for 13 stretch. Luke Scott went 1 for 3 and is without a multi-hit game this season. Miguel Tejada went hitless and is 1 for 16 vs. Tampa this year. A walk is as good as a hit: Nick Markakis drew a walk in the third inning. It was his 10th of the year, which ties him with Adam Dunn of Washington for the Major League lead. He went 0 for 3 otherwise and is batting .143 on the year with no RBI to date.
