Potential roster move and update on Hardy's rehab assignment

The Orioles may be forced into making a roster move later today that impacts their bullpen.

A family situation arose late last night, according to manager Buck Showalter. Meanwhile, Alec Asher no longer is listed as the starter at Triple-A Norfolk.

Miguel Castro, who has worked 2 1/3 innings on back-to-back nights, met with Showalter in the manager's office earlier this morning.

"Any speculation about that would be really wrong because we don't know yet because we're waiting on a family situation that occurred last night," Showalter said. "We're waiting to see about those travel plans, so nobody's been sent out.

"Someone's here that we're thinking about activating. We're preparing for that. But we've got some moving parts that have changed since last night, so we're waiting to see with a lot of respect for the person and their family that we're not going to talk about here. So, I'd be real careful about speculating about anything. There might be a chance that you're going to be wrong."

"He told me he's planning on going down there and playing nine innings, so that's a good sign that he feels well. We'll see if that happens," Showalter said.

"He and Bobby (Dickerson) will be talking, and of course he'll be talking with R.J. (Ron Johnson) and let him know how he's feeling each day. Whether he plays five, seven nine innings will be up to him."

Hardy apparently will stay with Norfolk.

Showalter said throwing will be the biggest challenge for Hardy, who's recovered from a fractured right wrist.

"That would be the only thing that would keep him down, just getting his arm back in shape, his shoulder, elbow, wrist," Showalter said. "Watching him out here, I think that's going to be the last thing that comes.

"He's been pretty impressive in BP. He's swinging the bat well. So, I think that's what he's waiting on to be able to say, 'I'm ready.'

"J.J., you can tell he's ready to get back and he's been working real hard. Once he got back on the field and taking ground balls and stuff ... Every early session on the road that we could get in, he was a part of it. He was out there at 3 o'clock every day with Bobby."

Chris Davis has returned to the lineup after missing the last two games due to illness.

"Chris, I actually communicated with him last night about possibly pinch-hitting," Showalter said. "I talked to him some yesterday while he was here, trying to keep him away from everybody. Talked to him a little bit after the game last night and again today. He's ready to go."
