Scherzer named NL Player of the Week

Max Scherzer is National League Player of the Week. And it's probably safe to assume he's about to named NL Pitcher of the Month as well.

Scherzer-Mad-Max-Face-Gray-Front-Sidebar.jpgScherzer earned the first of his two likely honors today when Major League Baseball named him the NL's Player of the Week following a pair of dominant performances during the Nationals' just-completed 5-1 road trip. He held the Marlins to one run on five hits in eight innings on Tuesday, striking out 10. Then he returned to Detroit on Sunday for the first time since leaving the Tigers as a free agent following the 2014 season and allowed one run on four hits over eight innings, striking out 14.

After the game, the right-hander learned he had been selected to his seventh consecutive All-Star Game.

All of this wrapped up perhaps the best month of Scherzer's career. He finished June a perfect 6-0 with a 1.00 ERA, 68 strikeouts and five walks in 45 innings and should be honored for that sustained run of excellence Tuesday.

Scherzer is likely to close out his first half either Friday or Saturday against the Royals at Nationals Park.
