Schoop chosen as AL Player of the Week

Challenged to accept the torch passed to him by Manny Machado, Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop has run with it.

Schoop was named the American League's Player of the Week for the period of July 23-29 after registering a .379/.379/.931 slash line with one double, five home runs, 13 RBIs and six runs scored in six games. He collected 11 hits in 29 at-bats.

The announcement was made on MLB Network.

Among the qualified AL leaders, Schoop was tied for first in home runs, RBIs and total bases, ranked third in slugging percentage, tied for third in extra-base hits, tied for fifth in hits and tied for ninth in runs scored.

Machado, traded to the Dodgers one day after the All-Star break, earned the honor on April 22.

Schoop, who also was chosen as AL Player of the Week last season for the period ending July 23, has homered in six of his last seven games. He tied the major league record for second basemen with homers in five straight games.

A leaping catch at the fence Saturday night by Rays left fielder Joey Wendle denied Schoop of a sixth consecutive game with a home run and sole possession of the record. Schoop responded yesterday with a three-run shot off Andrew Kittredge in the seventh inning.

Schoop will carry a 12-game hitting streak into Tuesday night's game against the Yankees in the Bronx, tied for the longest of his career. He's batting .345 (19-for-55) during that stretch and .360 (36-for-100) with nine home runs in 24 games in July.

Meanwhile, the Orioles need a reliever to replace Brad Brach, traded yesterday to the Braves for $250,000 in international signing bonus slot money.

Right-hander Cody Carroll, obtained from the Yankees in the Zach Britton deal, will join the Orioles unless there's a late change in plans. He can fill one of the three openings on the 40-man roster.

Carroll has made two appearances with Triple-A Norfolk and he allowed one run and one hit with two strikeouts in two innings. He was 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 32 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and opponents in the International League were batting .184 against him.

Carroll's most recent outing was Saturday night against Toledo. Left-hander Josh Rogers, also part of the package received for Britton, allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings.
