Showalter on his team's power surge and Guerrero's power outage

It probably should not come as a shock to anyone, but Orioles manager Buck Showalter did express concern today over the lack of production from Vladimir Guerrero, his cleanup hitter. Guerrero has just four extra-base hits, two homers and two doubles, over his last 32 games. His current slugging percentage is .388 down from last year's .496 and his OPS is down from .841 to .702. "Yeah, there is (reason to be concerned)," Showalter said. "But, Vladdy we all know, he's not conventional. You keep trying to trust that, if there's such a thing. "Other than his average, and, in fact his lifetime average is higher than that (what it is now). If we have to make an adjustment at some point we will. "We'll see how it goes between now and the All-Star break." Guerrero had a huge first half last season with Texas and had 20 homers by the All-Star break and he has just six now. Guerrero hit four homers in April, but has hit just two in 45 games since May 1. While he is on a homer drought, the Orioles are on a homer binge now. They hit nine over the weekend and have 27 over the last 17 games. The Orioles lead the American League with 32 homers in June although Showalter is at a loss to explain the recent power surge. "If I knew that, I'd have turned that switch on a long time ago," he said. "I hear people talk about the ballpark and how it plays, me included. But I just think guys are squaring up mistakes and putting a good swing on it. "If you get too over-analytical on it, and say this is the exact reason, a week from now maybe we haven't hit one in a week and you don't have the answers. "With a couple of exceptions, we have guys pretty close to doing what we thought they would do, with two or three exceptions. We talked in spring about trying to stretch out the challenges for a pitcher in our order."
