Showalter pregame on Trumbo, Mullins and more (game update)

TORONTO - When he met with reporters before tonight's game, Orioles manager Buck Showalter still had not gotten the results of an MRI on the right knee of Mark Trumbo. Trumbo, batting .261 with 17 homers and 44 RBIs, went on the 10-day disabled list today with right knee inflammation.

The Orioles are still trying to determine the timetable for his return.

"Hopefully, there is not any real structural changes," Showalter said. "We'll see. Yesterday,, I could tell he was struggling. Usually, it's more about deceling - when he slows down, it bothers him. Once he gets underway, it's not too bad, but yesterday just didn't feel real stable. Hopefully, we'll get some good news and it won't be too long."

The Orioles today got outfielder Adam Jones back, reinstated off the the bereavement list. They also recalled outfielder John Andreoli from Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles claimed him on waivers from Seattle on Saturday. He was Norfolk-bound, but then was told to join the big league club in Toronto. Andreoli was batting .287/.397/.401 with 18 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 36 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 89 games with Triple-A Tacoma.

"He's been traveling all day," Showalter said. "He flew from California to Norfolk and got on a plane early this morning, which got delayed. He didn't get into Toronto until about 3 or 3:30, so I'll back off him today and potentially play him tomorrow. We'll see how it goes. Let him get his feet on the ground.

"You can see all the scouting reports and film and talk to all the people that had him, but I'm kind of, (let's get a) fresh look. Just want him to get settled in, let him play and see if he's a potential contributor for us as we go forward. He's a young, athletic guy that is going to get an opportunity to impress."

The Orioles made their first official splash into the international amateur market today, announcing they have signed Isaac Bellony, a 16-year-old switch-hitting outfielder out of the Dominican Republic who was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This is the first announcement by the club of any international amateur signing since the new signing period went into effect on July 2.

Showalter was asked his opinion on the club making this announcement and getting more involved in the international amateur market.

"Well I could say two words, Jon Schoop. It's exciting for us," he said. "I don't know all the particulars, but potentially what that could do for us down the road. Just look around the rosters of baseball. Watch All-Star Games. That is a part of the industry you need to be involved with if you can."

Showalter talked about the club adding speed to the lineup now that Cedric Mullins is here to join Jonathan Villar in the lineup, and Andreoli brings speed, as well.

"You'd love to have it all with five-tool guys," Showalter said. "Everybody brings what they can bring. People talk all the time, you can't steal first base. But sometimes you can - with a bunt or putting pressure on the defense. Anytime you ask professional athletes to hurry or to get a team to operate outside their comfort zone of tempo, there are more errors made."

Speaking of Mullins, he is 4-for-7 his last two games with a double and homer. He has four multi-hit games among his nine since joining the team. He's batting .387/.457/.645 and six of his 12 hits are extra-base hits. The skipper has obviously been impressed.

"(There is) a certain calmness. A certain quietness to his game," Showalter said. "We talk about how the game has slowed down for Austin Wynns. Looks like Cedric brought that with him. It makes the opposition uncomfortable when young players don't have emotional at-bats. He'll have some down days. I don't think anyone expects him to hit what he's hitting now. But I'm not going to tell him that."

O's get the lead: The Orioles scored first tonight at Rogers Centre, where they are 0-7 this year. A Chris Davis sac fly to right made it 1-0 in the top of the third. Jonathan Villar singled with one out, moved to second on a Trey Mancini infield hit, stole third and scored on the Davis fly ball. Villar has two steals tonight to equal his total of his first 16 games with the team. Andrew Cashner has thrown two scoreless innings on 21 pitches to start his night.

Homer ties it: A solo homer in the fourth by Toronto's Kendrys Morales tied it 1-1. He hit a fly ball down the right-field line that carried 343 feet - just enough to knot the score through four.

Now Toronto leads: Morales hit another homer and this one went much further. His three-run blast to right-center in the fifth traveled 437 feet and made the lead 5-1 Jays. It followed by two batters an RBI double by Kevin Pillar that put the Blue Jays ahead 2-1. The O's have work to do to finally get a win at Rogers Centre. Morales has 22 career multi-homer games. He had hit just one homer this year versus the Orioles until tonight.

The Orioles got one back in the sixth. Renato Núñez hit a solo homer, his third with the club and the lead was cut to 5-2.
