Source: DiSarcina will be Nats' new third base coach

Davey Martinez has added another new member to his staff, hiring Gary DiSarcina as third base coach, making the former infielder and longtime big league coach the third new face brought in by Martinez since the season ended.

The hiring hasn't been formally announced yet, but a source familiar with the decision confirmed it. The Washington Post was first to report the news.

DiSarcina comes to D.C. after four years on the Mets' staff, the last three as third base coach. The 53-year-old was one of several staffers let go after the season amid an organizational overhaul that also cost manager Luis Rojas his job.

He was the Angels' third base coach for two seasons, then shifted to first base for one year. He spent 2017 with the Red Sox as bench coach to former manager John Farrell. He then went to the Mets in 2018, serving one season as former manager Mickey Callaway's bench coach and then shifting to third base coach in 2019, a job he held the last three seasons.

DiSarcina replaces longtime Nationals third base coach Bob Henley, who along with first base coach Randy Knorr has been reassigned to a role in player development. The Nats have hired 36-year-old former outfielder Eric Young Jr. as their new first base coach. They've also hired former Brewers and Diamondbacks hitting coach Darnell Coles to replace Kevin Long, who departed for the Phillies after the season ended.

The rest of Martinez's 2021 staff is expected to return, including bench coach Tim Bogar, pitching coach Jim Hickey, bullpen coach Henry Blanco and assistant hitting coach Pat Roessler. The Nationals could create some new positions, or shift others around as part of a larger reorganization.
