Span and Zimmerman stay hot (five innings, five homers, no Mets hits)

Denard Span extended his hitting streak to 20 games in style. Then Ryan Zimmerman kept his hot streak going with some flash, as well. Span and Zimmerman hit back-to-back homers to open tonight's game, giving the Nationals, and starter Gio Gonzalez, an early 2-0 lead. Span's shot was a laser to right field that cleared the wall and skipped up into the netting above the bullpens. It's his fourth of the season and takes away whatever drama there might have been thanks to Span's hitting streak entering tonight. That streak keeps on going, now reaching 20, which remains a career-high for Span and a season-high for the Nats. Zimmerman, meanwhile, now has a whopping six homers in his last seven games. His solo shot went out to left, giving the Nats two homers in a three-pitch span. The Nats' third baseman is up to 21 longballs on the season, and can't really be pitched to at the moment. This is the eighth time this season the Nats have hit back-to-back homers. It's the first time this season that they've had a homer leading off the game. It's also the second time they've given Mets righty Carlos Torres a rude welcome; the Nats reached Torres for eight runs in three innings during a July start. Update: Jayson Werth wanted in on the fun, so he crushed a three-run homer to left-center on the first pitch he saw from Torres in the third inning, giving the Nats a 5-0 lead. Werth now has 22 homers in what's been a tremendous season for him. The Nats have now scored 13 runs in their last six innings against Torres. Span has two hits in his first two at-bats tonight. He's now batting .412 during his 20-game streak and has raised his season batting average to .281. Update II: The Nats sure do love facing Carlos Torres. Tyler Moore smoked a solo homer to dead center in the fourth, giving the Nats their fourth longball of the night and a 6-0 lead. All six runs have come on homers. This is Moore's 17th hit since coming back from Triple-A Syracuse (just his second for extra bases) and he's bumped his average up to .219, this after it was at .151 at the time of his demotion in July. Update III: Turns out, it doesn't matter who's pitching for the Mets tonight. Wilson Ramos crushed a three-run homer in the fifth, giving the Nats five homers and making it a 9-0 Washington lead. The five homers have come from five different Nats. Only Adam LaRoche, Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon have yet to leave the yard tonight. Get on it, boys! Don't wanna be left out, do ya? All nine Nats runs have come via the homer. They have seven hits, and five of them have been longballs. Oh, and Gonzalez has yet to allow a hit through five innings. He's at 61 pitches. But he doesn't have a homer. What a crap performance from him tonight.
