Still looking for a run (O's lose 4-3)

The Orioles' scoreless-innings streak has reached 25, which isn't good when the offense is responsible for it. They have one hit in four innings against Mets starter Dillon Gee, the first for left-hander Brian Matusz in his major league career. Matusz lined a single into center field. He may serve as the DH this weekend. Matusz has held the Mets to two hits in three scoreless innings, but he's thrown 50 pitches because of the two errors behind him. Adam Jones nearly collided with Ryan Flaherty in left-center field as they both reached for a fly ball - Jones was charged with the error, but Flaherty needed to get out of the way - and Wilson Betemit threw away a ball after almost pulling Nick Johnson off first base on the previous play. The Orioles have committed 60 errors, the most in the majors. And third base continues to be a serious issue. Earlier today, manager Buck Showalter told reporters that Nick Markakis most likely would remain on the disabled list through the homestand. Markakis is itching to get back in the lineup, but the Orioles aren't going to rush him while he's still got some soreness in his right wrist. Down on the farm, Jamie Moyer has allowed one run - on Buffalo third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo's home run - and two hits in three innings for Triple-A Norfolk. He's walked none and struck out three. Instant update: Jones couldn't make a diving catch of Mike Nickeas' liner in right-center field with two outs in the fourth, and Scott Hairston scored to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Matusz has thrown 69 pitches, 49 for strikes. Update II: Matusz is charged with three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings, with two walks and two strikeouts. He threw 93 pitches, 62 for strikes. In his last three starts, Matusz has allowed 11 earned runs (12 total) and 20 hits in 13 1/3 innings, with 10 walks and nine strikeouts. Gee is shutting out the Orioles on one hit. His 3-0 lead looks insurmountable, given the Orioles' offensive woes. Jamie Moyer went four innings tonight for Norfolk, allowing one run and three hits, walking none and striking out four. He threw 77 pitches, 54 for strikes. Pretty quick hook. Interesting. Update III: The scoreless streak ended at 28 innings when Nick Johnson led off the eighth with an infield hit and Betemit launched a two-run homer to reduce the Mets' lead to 4-2. Betemit flipped the bat and admired his work as the ball headed for the upper deck. Update IV: The Orioles loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning against Frank Francisco, and Steve Pearce walked on four pitches to score Matt Wieters. But Brian Roberts grounded to second base, completing the Mets sweep of the three-game series The Orioles don't have a hit with a runner in scoring position since Saturday. Marinate in that one for a while.
