Strasburg and Tillman battling in D.C. (Nats fall 8-2 in 11 innings)

A pair of 48-win teams tangle in the Nation's Capital on Monday night as the Orioles arrive to face the Nationals. The teams opening day starters, Stephen Strasburg and Chris Tillman are off to great starts. Strasburg allowed only a Manny Machado double down the left field line in the first three innings. Machado's hot shot came in the second at-bat of the game. Strasburg has recorded one strikeout in each inning. But Strasburg is at 41 pitches after those three innings. Tillman did not give up a base hit in the first two frames, surrendering only a Denard Span walk to lead off the contest. We have no score as we head to the bottom of the third. Update: The Nationals' first hit was a clean single by Strasburg in the third, but Tillman got the next two outs to end the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Nelson Cruz got the Orioles on the board with a two-run shot. Cruz's 28th homer of the season came on a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field wall off of Strasburg. The Orioles lead 2-0 as the game moves to the bottom of the fourth. Update II: Wilson Ramos' two-out single in the fifth extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. The 11-game hit streak is also a Nationals' season high. Update III: Span started the sixth with a single up the middle which ended a tremendous at-bat against Tillman. <a href="http://masn.stats.com/mlb/playerstats.asp?id=9106">Anthony Rendon followed with a first pitch two-run shot over the right-center field wall, his 13th of the season, and the Nationals tied the game at 2-2. Update IV: In the bottom of the ninth, facing reliever Darren O'Day for the second inning in a row, the Nationals got men on first and second with one out. O'Day struck out Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos to end the inning. We're headed to extra innings tied at 2-2. The Orioles are 7-3 in extras, while the Nationals are 2-7. Update V: It was not Craig Stammen's night. In the 11th, the Nationals reliever allowed a two-run shot to Chris Davis, solo homer to J.J. Hardy and a RBI double to Nick Markakis. The Orioles blew open a close game with four runs in the 11th and led 6-2. But it wasn't just Stammen. The Orioles took it to Aaron Barrett as well on a Machado two-run shot and extend their lead to 8-2 in the 11th. Machado has a career-high five hits tonight. Update VI: The Nats were unable to rally in the bottom of the 11 and fell to 8-2.
