Are the Nats the team to beat in the NL East?

Are the Nats the team to beat in the NL East?
I went into spring training this year feeling that the Nationals were the favorites in the National League East by a pretty wide margin. I wasn't alone in this line of thinking. In fact, I believe the vast majority of the baseball world was with me. The Nats, after all, were coming off a 98-win season and their first division title in team history, had seemingly improved their roster with the additions of Dan Haren, Rafael Soriano and Denard Span, and would go into the 2013 season having...

Johnson recaps Nats' 5-2 loss

Johnson recaps Nats' 5-2 loss
Under normal circumstances, the Nationals would be happy winning two of three in a series with the first-place Braves. These are not normal circumstances. The Nats need wins. Lots of them. And even though they took the series with Atlanta by sweeping yesterday's doubleheader, they needed a win tonight as well. They didn't get it, falling to the Braves 5-2. "It's just not enough. We just can't afford to lose," manager Davey Johnson said. "It's that simple. We just need to get back at...

Ohlendorf on top of his game against Atlanta (a lot of drama in the middle innings)

Ohlendorf on top of his game against Atlanta (a lot of drama in the middle innings)
I'm not sure anyone could have expected a game started by Ross Ohlendorf and Alex Wood to be scoreless through 4 1/3 innings. I'm also not sure that anyone could have expected Ohlendorf and Tanner Roark to have combined to throw 12 straight scoreless innings against the Braves. But that's where we are. Ohlendorf has put up five scoreless frames tonight, allowing just one baserunner, striking out five and needing just 57 pitches to this point. He set down the first 10 Braves he saw before...

Notes on Span's streak, plus series finale lineups

Notes on Span's streak, plus series finale lineups
Denard Span's hitting streak has reached 28 games, and is now the longest streak in the big leagues since Dan Uggla had a hit in 33 consecutive games in 2011. Over this stretch, Span is hitting a ridiculous .378/.414/.504. He's continued his strong defensive play and even seen his production improve on the basepaths, where he's 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts. Since the start of his hitting streak, Span's season average has improved 25 points. His on-base percentage has jumped 23 points....

A lead, but a missed opportunity (Nats sweep doubleheader with 4-0 win)

A lead, but a missed opportunity (Nats sweep doubleheader with 4-0 win)
The Nationals hold a 1-0 lead after three innings tonight, thanks to Steve Lombardozzi's RBI single in the second, but they've already made two outs on the bases, one of which could have been easily prevented. After Tanner Roark's infield single leading off the third (which now makes the right-hander a spiffy 3-for-9 at the plate in his big league career), Denard Span shot a ground ball down to first base. Freddie Freeman gloved it and got the force at second, but shortstop Andrelton...

Tremendous postgame quotes from Haren (plus game two lineups)

Tremendous postgame quotes from Haren (plus game two lineups)
Dan Haren got robbed of a win today when the Braves came back to take a late lead in the first game of today's doubleheader. But the veteran right-hander couldn't seem to care much less about that. Given all that happened in the D.C. community yesterday with the tragic shooting at the Navy Yard, just blocks from Nats Park, Haren was more concerned with boosting fans' spirits and giving everyone a reason to smile again. And while his six innings of one-run ball weren't enough to lead the...

Clippard surrenders lead in eighth on Gattis homer (Nats win 6-5)

Clippard surrenders lead in eighth on Gattis homer (Nats win 6-5)
The Nationals held a 1-0 lead three batters into their half of the first inning. They had a 3-0 lead after a full inning of play, and looked poised to knock Braves starter Mike Minor from the game early and pile on the runs. The Nats now trail 4-3 midway through the eighth, largely due to Tyler Clippard surrendering a two-run homer to Evan Gattis in the eighth, and largely due to their own inability to produce any kind of add-on offense. Clippard gave up a one-out walk to Freddie Freeman in...

Minor issues for the Braves, Span keeps streaking (Haren goes six strong)

Minor issues for the Braves, Span keeps streaking (Haren goes six strong)
Boy, did Mike Minor ever have some trouble in the first inning. The Braves starter faced eight hitters in the first. He walked three, allowed two hits and threw a wild pitch. The left-hander ended up surrendering three runs, and needed 39 pitches to finally get out of the first inning. Things were looking so shaky there for a little while that Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez needed to get someone up and warming in the bullpen before Minor was able to get out of the frame. After back-to-back...

Let's play two

Let's play two
While the Nationals postponed last night's game in the wake of the mass shooting at the Navy Yard just blocks from Nationals Park, the rest of the baseball world did play on yesterday. And the Nats wake up a half-game farther back in the National League wild card chase than they were this time yesterday. The Reds beat the Astros last night, pushing Cincinnati five games ahead of the Nats for the final NL playoff spot. The Nats remain four back in the loss column, and have 13 games remaining...

Monday's Braves-Nats game postponed; split doubleheader Tuesday (updated)

Monday's Braves-Nats game postponed; split doubleheader Tuesday (updated)
In the wake of this morning's shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., just blocks from Nationals Park, the Nationals have announced that tonight's game against the Braves has been postponed. It will be replayed tomorrow as part of a split doubleheader, with games at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Nats released a statement, which reads as follows: "All of us here in the Nationals organization were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events that occurred this morning only a few blocks...

Navy Yard shooting could affect Braves-Nats game tonight (updated twice)

Navy Yard shooting could affect Braves-Nats game tonight (updated twice)
Nationals players have been told to stay away from Nationals Park for the time being after today's tragic shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., and we're awaiting word on how this situation might affect tonight's game between the Nats and Braves. According to media reports, two shooters "are down" after a massive police search of the Navy Yard, where at least 10 people were reportedly shot this morning, four of which were killed. Again, all that information is according to...

Breaking down the head-to-head beatdown

Breaking down the head-to-head beatdown
CHICAGO - Why do I have a feeling the Nationals are plenty happy to be out of Atlanta and done with trips to Turner Field for the rest of the season? The Braves have absolutely dominated the Nats this season, and if that wasn't already evident just by watching the games, you can look down at the game logs and see that yesterday's 2-1 Braves win boosts their record in the season series between these teams to 12-4. Yeah, that would qualify as domination. The strange thing, however, is that...

Johnson discusses Nats' 2-1 loss to Braves

Johnson discusses Nats' 2-1 loss to Braves
ATLANTA - In many ways, today's 2-1 Nationals loss was a microcosm of their season to this point. The Nats got pretty solid starting pitching, as Gio Gonzalez allowed two runs over seven innings. They gave themselves chances to do damage offensively, putting 12 runners on base and getting 13 at-bats with runners in scoring position. And yet, they drove in a single run and ended up on the losing end of another tight ballgame. The Nats couldn't capitalize on putting the first two runners on...

Nats' offensive futility hits a new low (Nats lose 2-1)

Nats' offensive futility hits a new low (Nats lose 2-1)
ATLANTA - The Nationals haven't had a problem getting runners on base today. That's been relatively easy. The problem has been doing anything at all with the scoring opportunities that have presented themselves. The Nats are a ridiculous 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position through just three innings this afternoon. They've put the first two runners on base in every inning so far, and have done nothing with those chances. In the first, Bryce Harper, Jayson Werth and Adam LaRoche went...

Harper and Werth playing, Zimmerman sitting

Harper and Werth playing, Zimmerman sitting
ATLANTA - Who's ready for some more baseball? The Nationals will take on the Braves this afternoon, about 13 hours after yesterday's game ended. Three players who played all 15 innings last night are in the Nats lineup today: Denard Span, Ian Desmond and Anthony Rendon. Jayson Werth (back stiffness) and Bryce Harper (left triceps bruise) are both in the lineup, as well. Harper was scratched from yesterday's starting lineup after he couldn't get his arm loose before the game, but replaced...

Strasburg and others discuss the Upton plunking and the ejection

Strasburg and others discuss the Upton plunking and the ejection
ATLANTA - Perhaps not surprisingly, Stephen Strasburg didn't have much to say about his plunking of Justin Upton in the bottom of the first inning tonight (or should I say, last night, given that it's 3:00 a.m.) or his ejection after throwing behind Andrelton Simmons in the second. Asked bluntly whether he intended to hit Upton in the first, when he drilled the Braves' top power hitter with a 97 mph fastball in the backside, Strasburg declined to discuss the matter. "I'm not gonna get...

Johnson and Knorr discuss Nats' 15-inning win

Johnson and Knorr discuss Nats' 15-inning win
ATLANTA - Anything to discuss after this one tonight? Pretty boring night of baseball, eh? The Nationals didn't just beat the Braves 8-7 in 15 innings tonight. They outlasted them. Neither starting pitcher tonight went more than two innings. Stephen Strasburg hit Justin Upton in the first and then was ejected in the second for throwing behind Andrelton Simmons. The Nats blew a 6-2 lead and then saw their two-run advantage in the ninth disappear when Rafael Soriano surrendered a two-out,...

To the 12th we go (Nats win a marathon, 8-7 in 15 innings)

To the 12th we go (Nats win a marathon, 8-7 in 15 innings)
ATLANTA - This game is just nuts. We head to the 12th inning tied 7-7 here at Turner Field after Ian Krol delivered two scoreless frames working for the second straight day. This comes after the rookie right-hander allowed a walk-off homer to Justin Upton in the bottom of the 10th last night. Quite a strong bounce-back performance from Krol, who has been mentally beaten down pretty good lately during a rough stretch. The Nationals don't have a hit since Ryan Zimmerman's homer with one out...

Strasburg drills Justin Upton with first-pitch fastball (Strasburg ejected)

Strasburg drills Justin Upton with first-pitch fastball (Strasburg ejected)
ATLANTA - Well, there we go. Stephen Strasburg drilled Justin Upton with a first-pitch 97 mph fastball in the backside in the bottom of the first inning, prompting warnings to be issued to both the Nationals and Braves by home plate umpire Marvin Hudson. The plunking came immediately after Jason Heyward hit a solo shot to right-center on a 3-2 Strasburg pitch. Upton stepped in, turned his back to the Strasburg heater and took it off the left buttocks. The Braves starting left fielder then...

Harper scratched with triceps bruise, plus retaliation talk

Harper scratched with triceps bruise, plus retaliation talk
ATLANTA - Bryce Harper was originally written into the Nationals lineup as their leadoff hitter and center fielder. That has since changed. Harper has been scratched from today's lineup due to a bruised left triceps, suffered last night when he was hit by a 91 mph fastball from Braves left-hander Luis Avilan. Harper had a bandage on the triceps after last night's game, and while he intended to start today, that won't end up happening. Manager Davey Johnson went to Harper at around 2:30...
