Navy Yard shooting could affect Braves-Nats game tonight (updated twice)

Nationals players have been told to stay away from Nationals Park for the time being after today's tragic shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., and we're awaiting word on how this situation might affect tonight's game between the Nats and Braves. According to media reports, two shooters "are down" after a massive police search of the Navy Yard, where at least 10 people were reportedly shot this morning, four of which were killed. Again, all that information is according to multiple reports. Obviously, baseball takes a backseat when it comes to situations like this. People have lost their lives today. But there is a baseball game scheduled for tonight, and I'll do my best to provide updates on whether that game will be played. Some Nationals employees made it in to Nats Park earlier today, but the area around the park has been locked down. Authorities have decided to use Parking Lot B outside of Nationals Park as a gathering area for families affected by today's incident, giving those of you not from the area an idea of the proximity of the stadium to the Navy Yard. The Navy Yard Metro stop is just outside of Nats Park. Some players generally don't get to the park until around 2:30-3:30 p.m. on a normal game day where the start time is set at 7:05 p.m., but a number of players arrive earlier to receive medical treatment, take part in throwing sessions or get extra batting or fielding work in. We'll have to see how things play out the rest of the afternoon. Update: D.C. Police chief Cathy Lanier just said in a press briefing that there are "potentially" two shooters still at large, wearing military-style attire. One shooter has been killed, and there are multiple victims that have been killed, as well. This is still considered an "active investigation" as authorities try and apprehend the shooter(s). Again, baseball is by no means a priority right now, and this is just me speculating, but I can't imagine the Nats and Braves end up playing tonight. There are still potentially two shooters on the loose wearing clothing that would allow them to easily blend in among hundreds of innocent military members. I find it hard to imagine that Major League Baseball would want to bring thousands of baseball fans into the Navy Yard area with everything going on down there, even if the suspect(s) at large are apprehended in the coming hours. I'll have more information as it becomes available. Update II: I just exchanged text messages with one Nationals player, who says that players have been told that they can report to the ballpark. It appears that - for now, at least - the Nats and Braves are planning to play tonight. I'm going to attempt to head over to the park in a bit, and will keep everyone posted on the latest as I get information.
