#TBT to "Nationals Classics": An abundance of offense

There's no way around it: Good teams make their hay at the plate.

And if you're one of those who favor offense over pitching, you'll want to pay close attention to this week's smorgasbord of "Nationals Classics" on MASN, which feature more offense than you can shake a stick at.

Of course, in this case, that stick would be a Louisville Slugger, or some other wooden implement used to terrorize pitchers.

So as you prepare for Thanksgiving, sit back and enjoy these offensive highlights from seasons past.

Thursday, Nov. 19 - 12:30 p.m. - If home runs are your thing, we've got 'em in this July 27, 2017 battle against the Braves that is filled with circuit clouts. Nine dingers were hit in this explosion, eight of them by the Nats, resulting in a 15-2 rout. Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman had a pair apiece, while Brian Goodwin, Wilmer Difo, José Lobaton and Anthony Rendon also went deep.

Thurday, Nov. 19 - 7 p.m. - This 15-3 shellacking of the homestanding Orioles from last Aug. 14 featured 19 hits by the Nationals, yet only one round-tripper. Asdrúbal Cabrera went yard in a six-run eighth inning at Camden Yards. Of the 19 Nats hits, only three were for extra bases.

Friday, Nov. 20 - 9 a.m. - If offense is the theme, you know there's some salami on tap. On April 9, 2014, Jayson Werth's eighth-inning grand slam off Carlos Mármol turned a 7-6 Marlins lead into a 10-7 Nationals victory.

Sunday, Nov. 22 - 11:30 p.m. - Saving their best for last, the Nats walked off the Angels on April 23, 2014, scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth. Lobaton hit a solo homer, Werth contributed a two-run double and then scored the game-winner on Adam LaRoche's single to center.

Monday, Nov. 23 - 5 p.m. - During his time with the Nats, Michael A. Taylor showed a flair for the dramatic, including this game against the Braves from Sept. 11, 2020. In the 12th inning, Taylor singled in Adam Eaton with the decisive tally.

Tuesday, Nov. 24 - 3:30 p.m. - There wasn't a ton of offense in the Nats' season opener on April 1, 2013. While Stephen Strasburg took care of the Marlins, retiring 19 straight Fish at one juncture, Harper hit a pair of solo homers in a 2-0 triumph.

Tuesday, Nov. 24 - 11:30 p.m. - Long before he was racking up MVP votes, Trea Turner was a Nationals rookie, a shortstop-turned-center fielder filling a need on a playoff team. On Sept. 9, 2016, Turner played the hero with a walk-off homer in a 5-4 win over the Phillies.

Wednesday, Nov. 25 - 9 a.m. - While the turkey is brining and you're getting a head start on the kitchen prep by chopping onions and celery, revel in Juan Soto's exploits in this 7-6 win over the Phillies that gave the Nats a doubleheader sweep at Citizens Bank Park. Soto homered twice and drove in four runs, including the solo blast in the top of the 10th that gave Washington a victory.

Wednesday, Nov. 25 - 6 p.m. - On Sept. 27, 2020, the day the truncated season ended with a 15-5 laugher over the Mets, Soto walked and singled, finishing the season with a .351 average that led the National League. At 21, he was the youngest NL batting champ in history.
