#TBT to "Nationals Classics": Buffet features vintage performances and fresh stars

Yeah, there's still some baseball to be played, but with the Nationals missing the postseason for the first time in three years and the Braves eliminated, there's nobody left that you're really rooting for or against.

Meanwhile, the falling temperatures of autumn have got you craving a little comfort food. Something to nosh on while the league championship series wrap up, the World Series starts up and the Nats make offseason preparations for a return to the playoffs in 2019.

The chefs here at MASN have cooked up a smorgasbord of some favorite treats, served at breakfast, lunch and dinner hours in the coming week. On the "Nationals Classics" menu are an assortment of comeback wins, a wild game ending, a pitching performance brushed with perfection, stuffed victory in a reduction of beer and, for the piece de resistance, a young sprout picked at the peak of flavor.

Thursday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m. - If you're hungry for taters with salami, we've got two big helpings for you here, courtesy of right fielder Josh Willingham, who put eight RBIs on a platter with two bases-loaded homers in Milwaukee on July 27, 2009. But save room for dessert: Ryan Zimmerman's eighth-inning dinger in the Nationals' 14-6 win.

Monday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m. - Zimmerman hit another sweet shot on Sept. 6, 2009, in a comeback victory over the Marlins at Nationals Park. The Nats scored two runs to tie the game in the eighth inning, only to fall behind by two again in the top of the ninth. With Juan Carlos Oviedo on the mound to go for the save, Willie Harris hit a solo shot to halve the deficit. Then, with Cristian Guzman on, Zimmerman launched one to deep left-center to secure a 5-4 walk-off win.

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 12:30 p.m. - Zimmerman again played a crucial role when the Nats came out on top in a 5-4 contest on July 17, 2012. With Tyler Moore at the plate, Zimmerman came home when Mets reliever Pedro Beato threw a wild pitch, handing the Nats a walk-off victory.

Tuesday, Oct. 23, 7:30 p.m. - Max Scherzer had to settle for just a no-hitter against the Pirates at Nats Park on June 20, 2015. The Bucs, who hadn't had a baserunner all day, were down to their final out when the Nationals ace plunked José Tabata. But Josh Harrison's flyout in the next and final at-bat sealed the no-no.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 9 a.m. - Jayson Werth scored on pinch-hitter Scott Hairston's sac fly in the 11th for a walk-off triumph over the Pirates on Aug. 17, 2014.

Wednesday, Oct. 24, 7:30 p.m. - Fast forward to (almost) the present and watch the emergence of a future star. On May 21 of this year, the Padres were in town, perhaps experiencing a bit of deja vu as rookie 19-year-old Juan Soto became the first teenager to hit a big league homer since Bryce Harper, then 19, did it against the Padres in May 2012.
