Texas manager Ron Washington on his team's first loss and Zach Britton

After his team suffered its first loss of the 2011 season after a 6-0 start, Texas manager Ron Washington said the O's just outplayed his squad in their 5-0 win in game one of a doubleheader. "We just got beat today," Washington said. "I wouldn't say we lost, I'd say they beat us. You lose it if you are out there throwing balls all around, but they beat us. "They got a big three-run bomb. Markakis got them on the board in the beginning and that young kid (Zach Britton), he made the pitches when he had to." Washington was asked what he thought made Britton so tough in his outing of 7 2/3 innings of four-hit, shutout ball. "He had a good sinker working. When he got into trouble, he got that ground ball. When we did square him up, someone was standing there. We didn't square up enough of them though and his stuff was working today. "He moved the ball around. I didn't see him throw a lot of breaking balls, I saw him go with the change-up and sinker. You don't change something when it was working and it was working for him today. Two fly balls, that's all I remember. He kept his middle infielders busy." The Rangers were trying to match their club record best start at 7-0, set by their 1996 team, but Britton and the O's had other ideas. The last team to start a year 6-0 and be shutout in their 7th game of the season was the 2002 San Francisco Giants. Texas had scored 42 runs in winning its first six games, but today Rangers' batters had just five hits in 29 at bats vs. Britton and Jason Berken. Washington said his starter, Colby Lewis, got a couple of pitches up in the zone and they were hit for homers in the early innings by Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds. "Reynolds got him with a slider that was up. Reynolds has gotten many people and Markakis has gotten many people. Two good hitters and he threw some pitches where he probably didn't want them. That was the ballgame there, because Britton did the rest."
