Here is how close things are: The Orioles just saw a six-game win streak snapped while New York had a seven-game streak end Sunday. The Yankees are 13-8 in September. The Orioles are 14-7. The Orioles were two games out on Sept. 2. Every day since, they have been within one game of first or tied for the top spot. Some fans have posted comments wondering if the Orioles can catch New York and wondering if the Yankees will ever lose again. The Orioles have done a great job of chasing down New York. They were 10 games out on July 18, but are 41-21 since. The Orioles were still seven games out on Aug. 17. The Orioles have played great baseball for a long stretch of season coming down the home stretch, winning nine of 12, 14 of 20 and 20 of 28. They are 32-14 over the last 46 games. That is .696 baseball. A lot is at stake here. One of these teams might win 95 games or so, finish with the second or third best record in the AL and have to play in a winner-take-all one game playoff round. It is even possible the Orioles and Yankees would need a one-game playoff to determine the division champ. The Orioles would host by virtue of a better AL East record (37-25 to 36-29). The loser of that game may then have to play the next day in the wild card game. What if the loser had to fly to Oakland or Los Angeles for that game? A lot is riding. Ten games over 10 days to determine whether they are in or out, a wild card entry or division camp and where they would play.
