Tonight's game and possible roster move

MIAMI - Orioles manager Buck Showalter will celebrate his 59th birthday today by deciding whether Jimmy Paredes should remain in the lineup and how many right-handers to send out against Marlins starter Dan Haren.

I'd prefer a bowling party. And cake.

Haren is a right-hander with reverse splits in his career. Right-handers bat .267 against him and left-handers bat .240. However, left-handers are hitting .271 against him this season and right-handers are hitting only .186.

Jimmy Paredes white homer.pngShowalter, having lost his designated hitter in this interleague series, started Paredes at second base last night and was rewarded with three hits and an RBI. He wouldn't commit beyond one game.

"The plan is for him to play second base (Friday). See what tomorrow brings. That's a possibility," Showalter said before the Orioles' 8-5 win.

"If you look at Danny Haren, who's a reverse splits guy, you'll probably see possibly Delmon (Young) and Steve (Pearce) in there. I knew that coming into the series that we'd probably want to be a little more right-handed tomorrow."

Showalter suggested that Paredes could play left field tonight. Paredes didn't look comfortable out there in a couple of exhibition games, but it may be worth a shot.

Haren is 4-2 with a 3.47 ERA in eight starts this season, with two earned runs or fewer allowed in six outings. He's walked eight and struck out 33 in 49 1/3 innings.

Haren is 5-4 with a 3.87 ERA in 12 career starts against the Orioles. Young is 10-for-32 (.313) with three doubles. He's going to be in the lineup.

Adam Jones is 5-for-14 (.357) with a double, J.J. Hardy is 5-for-15 (.333) with three doubles and Travis Snider is 2-for-3 with a home run.

Chris Davis is 2-for-13 (.154) with a double and five strikeouts. Steve Pearce and Alejandro De Aza are 2-for-9 (.222).

Davis has drawn five walks in his last four games. He hasn't struck out in the last two.

Snider doesn't have an RBI since April 23, a span of 16 games.

Mike Wright makes his second major league start tonight after shutting out the Angels on four hits over 7 1/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter.

The Angels' right-handed hitters were 1-for-14 against Wright.

Showalter said the Orioles came close to adding a bullpen arm yesterday and decided to see how the game played out. They used four relievers after starter Ubaldo Jimenez worked four innings, and Tommy Hunter and Brad Brach aren't available tonight.

Tyler Wilson could get sent down today after earning his first major league win. He's worked two of the last three games and figures to come off the 25-man roster.

"I don't think about that too much," he said. "I'm really trying to enjoy every single day, learn as much as I can while I'm here and help the team in the process."

Steve Johnson and Chaz Roe pitched for the Tides yesterday in Game 1 of a doubleheader after starter Bud Norris was removed. Cesar Cabral and Jorge Rondon followed starter Michael Bowden to the mound in Game 2. Elih Villanueva is the scheduled starter today.

Knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa and Oliver Drake (Navy) are on the 40-man roster. Gamboa threw 4 1/3 innings on Wednesday. Drake threw an inning on the same night.

Gamboa is 2-3 with a 4.62 ERA in 37 innings over eight starts with the Tides. Drake has posted a 0.96 ERA, with two runs, 10 hits, four walks and 30 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings.

Showalter would prefer a multi-inning reliever, which favors Gamboa, who doesn't need a lot of rest. But Drake has been dominating International League hitters, and Showalter continues to rave about him.

Drake has worked one inning or fewer in every outing this season except one. He went two innings on May 16.
