After two rookies combined for 10 scoreless innings, another pitcher was ejected and both teams had runners thrown out at the plate, the Marlins finally won the game in the bottom of the 13th.
With the bases loaded and two outs after the O's intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton with runners on first and third, Martin Prado singled to right-center off T.J. McFarland and Miami beat the Orioles 1-0.
The O's missed a chance to get to .500 and fell to 19-21, while Miami ended an eight-game losing streak.
McFarland was the O's fifth pitcher and came on after Brian Matusz was ejected with two outs in the last of the 12th. He gave up a leadoff walk in the 13th on four pitches to Adeiny Hechavarria, who eventually scored the winning run.
The game featured the major league debut of right-hander Oliver Drake, who pitched scoreless ball ifor three innings.
He allowed two singles in the 10th and, with two outs and runners on second and third, bounced a pitch that got away from catcher Caleb Joseph. With Hechavarria running home with the potential winning run, Drake ran off the mound, covered the plate and took a throw from Joseph to get the out on a close play. A replay review confirmed the out call and the game went on to the 11th.
In the last of the 12th inning, Matusz was ejected after coming in and getting the first two batters out. A FOX replay showed Matusz touching something on his right arm. After an umpire touched his arm, Matusz was ejected by Paul Emmel.
Much earlier, O's right-hander Mike Wright made another scoreless start.
Wright pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits in a very strong follow-up to Sunday's outstanding major league debut. He gave up three hits with three walks (two intentional) and four strikeouts. Wright threw 98 pitches, 56 for strikes.
He stranded two Marlins runners in each of his last three innings. On what turned out to be his last pitch, he struck out pinch-hitter Michael Morse on a 96 mph fastball to end the seventh with runners on the corners.
Through his first two big league starts, Wright has pitched 14 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and no runs. Opponents are hitting .146 (7-for-48) against him, including 0-for-6 when batting with runners in scoring position.
This is the most consecutive scoreless innings by an O's pitcher to start his career since Dave Ford threw 15 straight in 1978.
The Orioles missed on several scoring chances throughout this game. They put the first two runners on base in the first and second inning and did not score. Manny Machado led off the fifth with a double and didn't advance to third.
In the sixth, Travis Snider was thrown out at the plate. Snider doubled with two outs and none on and Caleb Joseph, batting eighth, was intentionally walked to bring up Wright.
Wright singled to center and Snider was waved home. He was thrown out on a very close play by center fielder Marcell Ozuna. Snider tried to get his hand around the tag but was called out and the O's did not ask for a replay review.
For the night, the Orioles were held to nine hits and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 on base. O's hitters went just 2-for-22 over the last seven innings against the Miami bullpen after starter Dan Haren pitched six innings. Their sixth pitcher, Carter Capps, went three innings with six strikeouts to get the victory.
