Trey Mancini hits first major league homer, but O's lose to Boston

Boston's Mookie Betts and David Ortiz combined to beat the Orioles. Yes, again. The two players that O's pitchers can't contain this year helped Boston to a 5-2 win tonight at Camden Yards.

At 82-69 the Orioles have lost the first two games of this four-game series to fall five games out of first place with 11 remaining. The hopes of another division championship are diminishing rapidly.

The Red Sox are 87-64 and moved to a season-best 23 games over .500 with their sixth win in a row and 11th in 14 games. They are 6-2 this year at OPACY.

With the Red Sox leading 2-1 in the seventh, Ortiz blasted a three-run homer to center with one out off right-hander Kevin Gausman. It was No. 36 of the season on a 1-2 pitch. Ortiz has eight homers this year against the Orioles and has hit 16 homers in 35 games at Oriole Park since 2012. He has 54 career homers against Baltimore pitching.

This game featured the first major league home run for the Orioles' Trey Mancini, who was recalled from the minors on Sunday. Tonight, in his first major league game, he hit a solo homer in his second at-bat.

With the Orioles down 2-0 in the fifth and held without a hit to that point, Mancini connected to left-center off Eduardo Rodriguez to make it a 2-1 game. He blasted a 1-1 fastball 434 feet with an exit velocity of 111 mph according to Statcast.

Mancini is the third player in O's history to homer in his major league debut, joining Larry Haney in 1966 and Jonathan Schoop in 2013. Before tonight, the last Oriole to homer for his first big league hit was Nick Markakis in 2006.

Mancini's homer brought the crowd of 20,387 to its feet cheering for the University of Notre Dame product, who got a curtain call as well.

The O's fell behind 2-0 on a Hanley Ramirez grounder that scored Betts in the third and on Jackie Bradley Jr.'s solo homer to right off Gausman in the fourth inning.

Gausman falls to 8-11 with an ERA of 3.57. He went 6 1/3 allowing 10 hits and five runs, throwing 101 pitches. He had pitched to an ERA of 0.82 his previous five outings with four scoreless starts.

Rodriguez went 6 1/3 innings allowing four hits and two runs on 90 pitches. He is now 3-7 with an ERA of 4.84. In five career starts at Camden Yards, he is 2-1 with a 1.63 ERA.

The Orioles are 2-4 on this homestand and have scored exactly two runs for four consecutive games. They are 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position in that stretch.
