Trey Mancini talks about his first callup to the major leagues

When Trey Mancini got a text from a club official last night saying to keep his phone nearby, he figured something was up. Not long after, Mancini got a call telling him he was headed to the big leagues for the first time.

"It is a dream come true," Mancini said this morning in the Orioles clubhouse. "The reason I have been playing baseball since I was 4 years old is to one day make the major leagues. It hasn't all really hit me yet because it all happened really fast. I found out last night and I'm just trying to take it all in right now."

Mancini was having dinner with his parents when that important call came.

"It was cool that they were there with me when I got the call. It was an exciting moment," he said.

The Orioles' 2015 minor league Player of the Year, Mancini batted .282/.357/.458 with 26 doubles, five triples, 20 home runs and 68 RBIs over 142 games between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk this year. Mancini has hit .306/.357/.472 with 119 doubles, 16 triples, 54 home runs and 275 RBIs over 483 career minor league games. He will wear No. 67.

Mancini was working out with a group of players in Sarasota, Fla., at the club's spring training complex hoping he might get this call.

"I mean, every year guys get called up from down there," he said. "Even when they told us we were going down there, it is exciting because you know there is that chance. You just go there and work hard as you have been doing for 150-some days and you just hope for that call."

After starting this season at Double-A Bowie, Mancini moved to Triple-A in late April. In 125 games with Norfolk, he hit .280 with 13 homers, 54 RBIs and a .775 OPS.

"The jump to Triple-A, it took a little bit of time to adjust to," Mancini said. "As far as the experience level goes up there, there are some older guys that have been around and really know how to pitch guys. So hope to make some adjustments. There a big difference I saw was in 2-0 and 3-1 counts, you get a lot of changeups and sliders, and you have to learn some of the pitchers' tendencies."

Mancini had to be added to the 40-man roster today. There, he takes the place of Steve Pearce, who was placed on the 60-day disabled list with a right flexor mass strain. That will end his season as he temporarily comes off the 40-man roster. The Orioles today also activated Darren O'Day off the DL.

So Mancini is delighted to be here and not sure yet how or when he'll be used.

"Just coming here prepared to play and will do whatever they want me to do," he said.
