SARASOTA, Fla. - Chris Tillman threw 61 pitches over three innings in this morning's simulated game. The crowd included Kevin Gausman, Dylan Bundy, Darren O'Day and Zach Britton.
Mark Trumbo is unavailable due to a sore right quadriceps muscle. Manager Buck Showalter estimated, after talking to head athletic trainer Brian Ebel, that Trumbo could be out for three to seven days.
"We're probably going to give him time to get that completely healed," Showalter said. "He's got a quad going on that may be some extended time on. He's got a pretty good quad there."
The leg began to bother Trumbo, who's 3-for-20, a few days before he was used as the designated hitter in Tuesday's game against the Twins in Fort Myers.
"He was feeling good and wanted to go over and take some at-bats, and he felt it a little bit the last couple at-bats and that's why I got him out of there," Showalter said. "During the season he could probably continue to play and wouldn't worry about it as much, but we've got plenty of time. I don't want that to turn into something and Brian doesn't, too."
Gabriel Ynoa is the scheduled starter for Saturday's game against the Pirates, but he's undergoing an MRI today. Nothing wrong with his arm. He has shin splints that bother him when he's running and doing conditioning drills.
"Just to make sure we know what we're dealing with down there because it's been something that hasn't gone completely away," Showalter said. "We've got that luxury of finding those things out."
Chris Davis said this morning that his right forearm and elbow feel a little better every day. The Orioles are being cautious to make sure he's ready when the games count.
"Getting better," Showalter confirmed. "He had some improvement yesterday. That's good to see."
Showalter said a weekend return for Davis would be "at the earliest."
"There's some encouraging improvement that he's making."
The Orioles are expected to make a roster cut before today's game.
Miguel Castro remains the starter for Friday afternoon's game against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, making his first Grapefruit League appearance after last Friday's B game.
Hunter Harvey starts Sunday afternoon's split-squad game against the Red Sox's Rick Porcello in Fort Myers. Andrew Cashner makes his first Grapefruit League start in the night portion against the Phillies at Ed Smith Stadium.
