Turner leaves game after being hit by pitch (Nats fall 8-2)

The Phillies came out of the gate quickly to begin the top of the first against the Nationals with back-to-back singles off of Max Scherzer.

Scherzer-Throws-Blue-300K-Game-Sidebar.jpgThen, in a matchup that felt like a playoff duel, Scherzer struck out former Nats right fielder Bryce Harper on a 2-2 changeup. The crowd at Nats Park went crazy. Scherzer got out of the inning unscathed.

However, with one out in the bottom of the first against Phillies starter Zach Eflin, Trea Turner was hit on his right index finger while attempting to bunt. He went down and was assisted by Nats head athletic trainer Dale Gilbert. Turner left the game. Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo replaced Turner and struck out.

If Turner has to go on the injured list, the Nats will not be able to activate infielder Howie Kendrick until Thursday. Adrián Sanchez and Carter Kieboom are with Triple-A Fresno, which opens at home against Reno on Thursday. Luis Garcia is their top prospect in Double-A Harrisburg, but he is not on the 40-man roster. Wednesday's game two of the series has a schedule start time of 1:05 p.m. EDT.

Maikel Franco hit a solo homer over the left field wall in the second.

Mid-second, the Phillies lead the Nats 1-0.

Update: Eflin has six strikeouts through three frames. Scherzer has allowed a home run, but also has struck out five through three himself. Harper has struck out twice.

After three innings, the Phillies lead the Nats 1-0.

Update II: In the fourth, the Phillies get a double by Odubel Herrera off the right-center field wall. Cesar Hernandez follows with an infield single. Scherzer intentionnaly walked Franco. During Eflin's at-bat, Yan Gomes could not handle a Scherzer offering. The passed ball went to the backstop, allowing Herrera to score.

Mid-fourth, the Phillies lead the Nats 2-0.

Update III: The Nats announced that Matt Adams left the game due to back spasms. He was replaced by Ryan Zimmerman in the fourth. Turner is going for X-rays on a finger injury.

Harper doubled in the fifth, but Scherzer go out of the inning without allowing another run.

Mid-fifth, the Phillies lead the Nats 2-0.

Update IV: Scherzer went five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with one intentional walk and nine strikeouts. He threw 96 pitches, 65 for strikes.

After five innnings, the Phillies lead the Nats 2-0.

Update V: Jean Segura hit a three-run double for the Phillies in the sixth off of Matt Grace. Harper added an RBI single. He is now 2-for-4 with an RBI and two strikeouts in his return to D.C.

Mid-sixth, the Phillies lead 6-0.

Update VI: Difo singled to begin the sixth. One batter later, Anthony Rendon crushed a two-run shot over the left field wall for his first homer of the season.

After six, the Phillies lead the Nats 6-2.

Update VII: Harper crushed a two-run homer off of Jeremy Hellickson in the eighth. He's gone 3-for-5 with a double, homer and three RBIs in his D.C. homecoming.

Mid-eighth, the Phillies lead the Nats 8-2.

Update VIII: The Nats go quietly in the ninth against Vince Velasquez.

Final score: Phillies 8, Nats 2.

The Nats are 1-3 to begin the season.
