Tyler Wilson moves into Bowie's rotation and other minor league notes

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Wilson, recently promoted from Single-A Frederick to Double-A Bowie, is going to enter the Bowie rotation and move into Zach Clark's rotation spot. Clark will continue to work on his new pitch, the knuckleball, in side sessions. Clark was 1-4 with an ERA of 8.59 in five starts since starting to throw a knuckleball. Wilson, the club's 10th-round pick in 2011 out of the University of Virginia, went 1-1 with a 4.48 ERA over 11 starts with Frederick. In 62 1/3 innings, he gave up 57 hits with 25 walks and 48 strikeouts. He had an ERA of 3.90 in five May starts. Wilson is expected to make his Double-A debut Saturday and he joins a rotation that includes Eddie Gamboa, Mike Wright, Devin Jones and Jake Pettit. Bowie's Henry Urrutia is now the Eastern League batting leader at .353 after going 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBIs last night. He is also third in slugging (.554), sixth in on-base percentage (.419) and fourth in OPS (.973). Over his last five games, Urrutia is 11-for-20 with eight RBIs and he is batting .424 (14-for-33) during an eight-game batting streak. At the moment, there don't appear to be any plans to promote Urrutia to Triple-A. The Orioles seem content to continue his development with Bowie. He is still knocking off some rust after almost two years of inactivity and still working on improving aspects of his game, like his defense and baserunning. Right-hander Matt Hobgood has hit a rough stretch with Single-A Delmarva. He gave up five runs in four innings last night and has allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits over his last three games, covering 7 1/3 innings. O's director of player development Brian Graham said Hobgood is healthy and continues to throw the ball well. His velocity is fine. He gave up a few bloop hits last night and there is no concern over this recent stretch. Hector Veloz, the player the Orioles signed to a $300,000 bonus out of the Dominican Republic in July 2010, is expected to be the starting third baseman at short-season Single-A Aberdeen when the IronBirds' new season begins June 17 at Ripken Stadium. Veloz signed what is believed to be the largest bonus given to a Dominican amateur in club history. Now 19, Veloz played at Aberdeen briefly last year, batting .219 over eight games after spending most of his summer in the Gulf Coast League. He has been playing for the Orioles' extended spring training team this year. The Orioles' extended spring team will play its last game June 8 and hold workouts in Florida on the June 10 and 11 before some players head north to Aberdeen and others stay in Sarasota for the opener Gulf Coast League play June 21.
