Upcoming starters and Father's Day lessons

While Chris Tillman tries to navigate through today's start at Camden Yards - he threw 38 pitches in a four-run second inning and is up to 99 through the fifth while holding an 8-4 lead - Kevin Gausman prepares for his assignment Monday night in Texas.

The dreaded one-game road trip.

According to STATS, this will mark the Orioles' first one-game trip wedged in between home games since June 25, 1967, when they visited the old Washington Senators. The Orioles are 3-2 in these games, with all of them coming against the Senators.

The Rangers are sending left-hander Derek Holland to the mound on Monday.

Tyler Wilson will start Tuesday night in the series opener against the Padres, who are sending Luis Perdomo to the mound. The Orioles aren't listing a starter for Wednesday night, but the candidates include Ubaldo Jimenez and Odrisamer Despaigne.

Would Despaigne have the advantage facing his old team, or would the Padres gain the edge against a pitcher who relies heavily on deception?

Would Despaigne no longer be available if he replaces Tillman today? Depends on how many pitches he throws. But Jimenez would seem to gain the edge.

The Padres' .240 average ranks 23rd in the majors going into today's games. Their .294 on-base percentage ranks ahead of only the Phillies, and their .387 slugging percentage ranks 26th. The .681 OPS is 28th.

Maybe they're exactly what Jimenez needs.

The Padres are sending Erik Johnson to the mound Wednesday, giving them two starters with ERAs of 8.79 and 8.44 in the series.

Too bad the Orioles aren't playing the Yankees today. Catcher Francisco Pena could spend Father's Day with first coach Tony Pena.

I asked Pena over the weekend to give me one lesson from his dad, a five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winning catcher, that's stayed with him throughout his life, whether or not it's related to baseball.

"It's from the game," Pena said. "He always told me to be the same way if you're doing bad or if you're doing good. I always remember that. Be the same person if I'm doing well or if I'm doing bad, because he always tells me that this game will humble you very quick if you don't. That's the one thing that I always remember that my dad's told me.

"In life, he always tells me to have a smile on my face, always be happy and always be grateful for the day that the Lord gave you every day."

Here are a few more from the clubhouse:

Joey Rickard: "It's a cliché, but keep your head up. Stay positive. That's really what my dad's always told me. Life's not fair, so just keep playing, keep your head up and keep at it."

Brad Brach: "Just always work hard. He was always big on that. Never quit, never give up and just always work your hardest. That's pretty much what he taught me and my two brothers all the time, just give your all no matter what it is. Whether it's baseball, whether it's your marriage, whatever. You work as hard as you can and at the end of the day, if it doesn't work out, you did your best and that's all you can do."

Paul Janish: "If I was going to pick something in particular that has stuck with me, and now having my own kids, it's become a huge priority for me, is when I was young, my parents and my dad in particular were very adamant about manners. Like being polite, your presentation, the way you present yourself to other people, the way you treat other people. And now, having kids of my own, especially boys, that's become at the forefront for me.

"Hopefully, they're smart and athletic and whatever and do well in school, but the one thing they're going to be is polite. The one thing they're going to do is act the right way, because anybody can do that. For me, personally, that's what I take. My parents were adamant about that when I was young.

"I find myself getting frustrated with my kids sometimes, obviously, but the one thing that aggravates me more than anything else is when they are not courteous to my wife or to my parents or to their other grandparents. That bugs me really more than anything. It's funny how those things resonate. I didn't realize it until I had kids, but now I realize how big a deal it is."
