Updates on Orioles signing drafted and undrafted players (more)

On the same day that teams are allowed to begin signing undrafted players, cleared to make some noise following the 48-hour quiet period, the Orioles have reached agreements with two of their selections from last week.

Both are high school players chosen at the backend of the abbreviated draft. Both are over-slot.

Right-hander Carter Baumler, a fifth-rounder from Dowling Catholic High School in Iowa, has agreed to terms on a $1.5 million contract, as first reported by Prospects 365's Mason McRae.

The Orioles already had a deal in place with third baseman Coby Mayo of Marjory Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) High School, who was selected one round ahead of Baumler. Mayo will receive a $1.75 million bonus.

Both deals are pending physicals and the club hasn't made an announcement.

The 103rd selection in the fourth round has a slot value of $565,500 and the 133rd in the fifth is $422,300. The Orioles used their savings earlier to keep the prep players from following through on their college commitments.

Mayo committed to the University of Florida and Baumler to TCU.

The Orioles are perceived to have gone under-slot with second overall pick Heston Kjerstad, an outfielder from Arkansas regarded as the top left-handed bat in the nation. They also chose Mississippi State shortstop Jordan Westburg 30th overall, Tulane outfielder Hudson Haskin 39th and Mississippi shortstop Anthony Servideo 74th.

Super-agent Scott Boras is serving as the advisor for Westburg and Haskin. Kjerstad is using the SSG agency.

Meanwhile, the Orioles reached agreements with two college players today, according to Baseball America's tracker. Maximum contracts for undrafted players is $20,000.

Auburn University right-hander Ryan Watson and Radford University first baseman JD Mundy are joining the organization and waiting for find out how they'll become acclimated to it while baseball is shut down and the minor league season is canceled.

Watson, a 6-foot-5, 215-lb. senior, allowed one run in 7 1/3 relief innings over five appearances before the sport was halted. He walked one batter and struck out seven.

In 24 appearances as a junior, Watson posted a 4.87 ERA and struck out 41 batters in 40 2/3 innings. He made only one start.

Watson was used in relief in 53 of 58 games over four years at Auburn.

Mundy, a senior from Roanoke, Va., batted .385/.468/.662 with a team-leading four home runs and 19 RBIs in 17 games before the shutdown. He tied for the team lead with six doubles and led the Big South Conference in homers, RBIs and slugging percentage (.662).

The left-handed hitting Mundy was chosen first-team All-Big South as a junior, posting a .304 average with a .412 on-base percentage and .588 slugging percentage. His 13 home runs led the team and ranked fourth in the conference, and he also led Radford 55 RBIs.

His 17 doubles were second in the conference and 120 total bases third. He led the team with 39 walks.

Mundy's first two seasons were spent at Virginia Tech before his transfer to Radford.

Mundy also has some experience at third base.

And, yes, the Orioles apparently have a case of the Mundys.

Update: The Orioles also signed 6-foot-6 right-hander Brandon Young of Louisiana-Lafayette, according to Baseball America's tracker.

Young allowed three earned runs and struck out 37 batters in 24 2/3 innings in four games (three starts) before the shutdown. He had 72 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings as a junior in 2019, but he also walked 34 batters and hit nine.
