Updates on roster and Roberts (and Simon)

The Orioles will put infielder Cesar Izturis on the disabled list if tonight's game is played. Brandon Snyder will be officially recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Snyder is in the clubhouse today. A decision on Derrek Lee could wait a few days. Troy Patton is here, but the Orioles don't have a pressing need for an extra reliever after last night's postponement, so the left-hander is in limbo again. Izturis is dealing with numbness in his right hand related to scar tissue in his elbow. He could get a cortisone injection to ease the discomfort, undergo surgery to remove the scar tissue or undergo a procedure to move the ulnar nerve. Removing the scar tissue won't prevent more of it from building. Moving the ulnar nerve is a "two to three month proposition," said manager Buck Showalter. Izturis has dealt with this numbness a few times in his career since having Tommy John surgery in 2005. Also, Brian Roberts has been bothered by headaches since diving into first base during the first inning of Monday night's game at Fenway Park. The Orioles don't know if the impact caused the headaches. Doctors are checking Roberts this afternoon. Brian Matusz is supposed to pitch at Double-A Bowie on Saturday, but he could join Norfolk if the weather is better in Virginia. No changes to the rotation, which means the Orioles will start Brad Bergesen on Friday, Jake Arrieta on Saturday and Chris Tillman on Sunday against the Nationals at Camden Yards. Alfredo Simon will come off the restricted list and join the Orioles on Sunday. He won't make another rehab start. The club views him as a long reliever, though his role could change. He's stretched out enough to start, and he's worked the late innings in the past. The Orioles were required to take Simon off the restricted list on Saturday, but they gained an extra day after he flew back to the Dominican. The Orioles will need to make a corresponding 40-man roster move.
