Updates on Hardy, Britton and Harvey

The Orioles are in the process today of determining a timetable for shortstop J.J. Hardy's return after he underwent a CT scan on his left foot.

Hardy fouled a ball off his foot in the fourth inning yesterday and is expected to land on the disabled list. The Orioles are gathering more information and formulating a roster plan.

Ryan Flaherty could be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Paul Janish goes on paternity leave Wednesday.

The news on closer Zach Britton appears much more positive, though his MRI wasn't scheduled until 1 p.m. His left ankle is feeling better today - there's been daily improvement since Saturday - and the Orioles seem confident that the MRI will match X-rays taken over the weekend.

The club is listing the injury as a sprain and there's a chance that he could be ready to pitch again Tuesday or Wednesday during the Orioles' series against the Yankees at Camden Yards.

Britton, an All-Star in 2015, is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA and six saves in 11 appearances this season, the loss coming on the night of his injury. He's allowed three runs and six hits in 10 innings, with two walks and 13 strikeouts.

Pitcher Hunter Harvey, the Orioles' No. 2 prospect per Baseball America, will undergo sports hernia surgery this week following today's examination in Philadelphia.

Harvey continues to experience discomfort in his groin, causing two setbacks since he was cleared to start throwing again. Dr. William Meyers examined Harvey today and confirmed the tear.

The Orioles are hopeful that Harvey, the former first-round pick who hasn't pitched in the minors since July 2014, will be ready by July 1.

Harvey's professional career already has stalled due to a strained right flexor mass and fractured fibula. He's recovered from those injuries and now must deal with the latest.
