Walk-off win: Adam Jones homers in 11th for 3-2 victory

Right-hander Dylan Bundy was brilliant and the Orioles finally broke up a 0-0 tie in a seventh inning where they struck out four times. But when the Twins tied the game in the ninth today, the Orioles needed more than that to produce an opening day win at Camden Yards.

From 2004 to 2016, the Orioles did not need extra frames in the opener. Now they've won in extras in back-to-back years to start the season. This is the third year in a row the Orioles produced an opening day walk-off win.

The Orioles have won eight consecutive season openers and 15 of their last 18. Their last loss in an opener was in 2010.

Lefty reliever Zach Duke replaced Twins starter Jake Odorizzi to start the seventh in a scoreless game. Duke fanned Trey Mancini, who still reached on a wild pitch to start the inning. One strikeout later, Mancini moved to second when pinch-hitter Danny Valencia was intentionally walked. A third strikeout later, catcher Caleb Joseph lined a first-pitch fastball to the gap in right-center to score two runs for the lead. When Chris Davis struck out, the O's had produced a four-strikeout, two-run inning on Joseph's third career triple.

But down to their last out in the top of the ninth, the Twins tied it 2-2. Brad Brach came on for the save ,but with one out, Eddie Rosario reached on an infield single that Davis could not handle on a high bounce at first. That sent an inning spiraling out of control. Brach walked two to load the bases and pinch-hitter Robbie Grossman batted with two outs. He flared a two-run single to center for the 2-2 tie on Brach's 34th pitch. Mychal Givens came on to get the inning's last out.

Bundy had an exceptional slider today and needed just 88 pitches, 64 for strikes, to pitch through the seventh. He gave up five singles with one walk and seven strikeouts. So much for pitching to a spring ERA of 7.20. Of his 24 sliders, 12 garnered swings and misses. In the seventh, he got six swings and misses on his eight sliders.

Bundy retired the first six batters he faced, needing just 12 pitches in a 1-2-3 first and just eight in the second. But he could have trailed 1-0 in the second if not for right fielder Craig Gentry, who went over the wall in right-center to rob the Twins' Eddie Rosario of a homer to start the second frame.

But through the sixth, Odorizzi put up zeros as well. He was replaced by Duke to start the seventh after allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts on 93 pitches. He got the Orioles to expand the zone to get several of his strikeouts this afternoon.

The Orioles improved to 43-22 all-time on opening day and to 4-1 when facing the Twins. Manager Buck Showalter is 14-5 in his managing career in openers, which includes an 8-0 mark with the Orioles.
