This was a nice way to start a homestand. Ubaldo Jiménez gave his team an outstanding start. He didn't get the win, but his team did with a walk-off victory in the last of the ninth.
The Orioles beat Kansas City 2-1 in front of 20,663 at Oriole Park in the opener of a three-game series.
Joakim Soria came on for the ninth for Kansas City and Caleb Joseph singled to center with one out. He advanced to second on Rubén Tejada's two-out single, which snapped an 0-for-19 stretch. That brought up No. 9 hitter Craig Gentry. He singled to center on a 1-2 pitch to end it and give the Orioles their seventh walk-off win of the season. It is Gentry's first career walk-off hit.
It was a milestone win for manager Buck Showalter. With his 1,480th career victory he ties Hall of Famer Earl Weaver for 24th on the all-time wins list.
Jiménez allowed a first-inning run tonight and nothing else over a seven-inning outing. He gave up five hits and one run with two walks and six strikeouts. He threw 100 pitches, 61 for strikes, and lowered his ERA to 6.56.
Over his last two starts, Jiménez has allowed eight hits and three runs over 13 innings. He has recorded back-to-back quality starts for the first time since Sept. 5-10, 2016.
Kansas City lefty Danny Duffy was matching Jiménez tonight and gave up one run and seven hits over seven innings on 106 pitches to lower his ERA to 3.42. He began the night 2-2 with an ERA of 2.41 in eight career games against Baltimore.
Kansas City took the lead in the first inning. Lorenzo Cain doubled to center with one out and stole third base with Eric Hosmer batting and two outs. That just made it a little easier for him to score when Hosmer lined a double to left for the 1-0 lead. It was his 56th RBI.
The Orioles made a bid to take the lead in the last of the second, but were denied. After Trey Mancini led off with a single off Duffy, Chris Davis lined a shot at 104 mph to deep center. Cain leaped at the fence and robbed Davis of a two-run homer and the Orioles of the lead.
Baltimore was held scoreless through four innings but tied the game 1-1 in the fifth. Manny Machado doubled to right with two outs and scored on Jonathan Schoop's single to center. It was RBI No. 77 for Schoop, who began today three off the American League RBI lead of 79 held by former Oriole Nelson Cruz. Schoop has 23 RBIs over his last 14 games.
In the second game of this series on Tuesday night, right-hander Dylan Bundy (9-8, 4.53 ERA) faces right-hander Ian Kennedy (4-6, 4.43 ERA).
