Weekly Wrap: Spring training games under way

Spring training games start today! The lineup was already posted Wednesday, with Taylor Jordan penciled in to start. On Sunday, the Nationals will play their first televised game, so be sure to tune in to MASN HD! You can see the full spring training broadcast schedule here. While we were waiting around for actual games, there was a lot of news coming out of Nats camp in Viera, Fla. Many pitchers threw successful bullpen sessions this week, including Sammy Solis, Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen. Ace Stephen Strasburg and Ross Detwiler both worked on new pitches, and we'll be waiting to see if they can implement them during the season. Beyond allowing seasoned starters to get back in the groove of things, spring also spotlights many fringe players and up-and-coming talent. Take 34-year-old Clay Hensley as an example. The pitcher was thinking about hanging up his cleats, as he could no longer top 81 mph. However, after undergoing a quirky throwing program, he is now throwing 91 mph and competing for a bullpen spot. In addition to the normal workouts and bullpen sessions, pitchers also participated in an appropriately titled "pitchers' hitting game" this week. While it's a little hard to explain, know that it involved a lot of laughter and arguing from Gio Gonzalez. Check out video of the game here. In injury news, Ryan Mattheus has been listed as day-to-day with inflammation in his chest. Since the Nats are in a year of transition, there have been a lot questions that are still being answered. How does Matt Williams compare to Davey Johnson? How will Nats catchers respond to MLB's new rules regarding plays at the plate? I guess only time will tell.
