Wieters and Schoop combine for seven RBIs in win over Blue Jays

Chris Tillman had one bad inning. It elevated his pitch count and got him out of this game sooner than he wanted. But the Orioles' offense had a few good innings and that was more than enough.

The O's took the final two games of this series, beating Toronto today 11-6 at Camden Yards as Matt Wieters went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and Jonathan Schoop went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer. The Orioles' offense produced a season-high 19 hits in 41 at-bats. Their 11 runs were two off the season high.

The Orioles have lost just one home series all year and improved to 9-1-2 in series at Camden Yards and to 26-12 at home. Their overall record is 40-28 and they've won nine of 14 and 12 of the last 18 games.

Chris Davis delivered a two-out RBI single in the first and Wieters followed with a two-run blast to right-center for the 3-0 lead on his seventh home run. But then came Tillman's bad inning, the top of the second. He allowed two-run homers to Troy Tulowitzki and Devon Travis as Toronto moved ahead 4-3.

But the Orioles kept hitting Toronto starter Marcus Stroman. Ryan Flaherty's RBI single made it 4-4 in the second. The O's knocked Stroman out during a three-run bottom of the fourth that featured five more hits. They made it 7-4 on Schoop's RBI single, Flaherty's RBI double and an Adam Jones RBI single. When Wieters added his third RBI - on a single in the fifth - the lead grew to 8-4.

After Toronto cut that to 8-6, the O's pulled away with a three-run seventh on Wieters' RBI single and Schoop's big blast to left. He crushed a two-run shot for his 12th homer and an 11-6 lead. Statcast estimated the blast to have gone 458 feet with an exit velocity of 110 mph.

Schoop had 39 RBIs last year in 305 at-bats. He now has 41 in 247 at-bats. Wieters was 2-for-27 his last eight games before his big game today. Davis went 3-for-4 today, Hyun Soo Kim went 3-for-5 and is batting .340 and Flaherty added two RBIs.

This was the first of four games the Orioles are playing with a 24-man roster and without Manny Machado, who began serving his four-game suspension today. For one day at least, they did just fine.

Tillman became a 10-game winner this afternoon. Over five innings and 99 pitches he allowed five hits and four runs. He is 10-1 with an ERA of 3.11 and the Orioles are 13-2 in his 15 starts. Tillman threw 38 pitches in that second inning to keep him from getting deeper into this game. The Blue Jays went 1-for-13 against him in innings one, three, four and five.

Stroman has been struggling and did again today, allowing seven runs over 3 2/3 innings, his shortest start of the year. In his past two starts against the Orioles he has allowed 18 hits and 11 runs over nine innings. He is 6-3 with an ERA of 5.23 for the season and has an ERA of 7.59 over his past seven starts.

Now the Orioles play a makeup game from an April rainout tomorrow night at Texas. It's a one-game series before they return home on Tuesday. Kevin Gausman (0-4, 4.14) takes the mound for the O's in Texas against left-hander Derek Holland (5-5, 5.14 ERA).
