Wigginton comes up big again as O's beat Sox 9-1 at Fenway

For the third day in a row, Ty Wigginton produced the RBI that untied a game and led the Orioles to a win. Tonight at Boston, Wigginton's three-run homer in the 7th, just inside of the Pesky Pole in Fenway Park's right field, gave the O's a 4-1 lead and they beat the Red Sox, 9-1. The O's have taken the first two games of the set and it's their first three-game series win at Fenway since July of 2004. The Orioles improve to 29-17 (.630) since Buck Showalter took over as manager. They now lead the season series 9-8 vs. Boston and are 10-3 in their past 13 games vs. AL East opponents. After Adam Jones scored the tie run from first base with two outs in the sixth when Marco Scutaro could not catch a pop up, Wigginton came up in a key spot in the seventh. After Clay Buchholz left after six innings and 112 pitches, Scott Atchison took the mound in a 1-1 tie. With two men on, Wigginton hit the first pitch he saw high to right field and it landed just over the wall near the foul pole for a three-run shot and 4-1 lead. It was his 21st homer and first since August 22nd. Wigginton and Jones each had three hits as the O's outhit Boston, 13-8. The O's added a run in the 8th on a Robert Andino sac fly and scored four in the 9th vs. Jonathan Papelbon to turn this one into a late blowout. Brad Bergesen gave up just one run and five hits over six innings to get the win and is 8-10, 4.90. Bergesen has allowed exactly one earned run in six of his last nine starts. He has pitched to an ERA of 1.27 over his past three starts and 2.31 over his last ten. The Orioles have now won eight of 11 games and are 16-7 since August 27th. They are 32-31 since the All-Star break. If the O's go 4-7 or better over the final 11 games they will exceed last year's win total of 64. Tonight's win guaranteed the O's would finish with a winning record since Showalter took over on August 3rd.
