Williams discusses Nats' 4-3 11-inning loss

SAN DIEGO - The Nationals were one out from locking up their third straight series win and picking up their fifth straight victory overall.

Then Yonder Alonso connected on a 1-0 fastball from Rafael Soriano - a pitch that was supposed to be down and away but stayed over the heart of the plate - and tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.

Two innings later, Cameron Maybin blooped a single into right field off Craig Stammen, scoring Chase Headley with the game-winning run and sending the Padres to a 4-3 walk-off victory.

Blake Treinen went six strong innings for the Nats, allowing just two runs on five hits, and Ian Desmond crushed a two-run homer in the seventh that gave the Nats the lead. But the Padres delivered a couple clutch hits and walked the Nats off in the second game of this three-game set.

Here's manager Matt Williams after the game:

On Treinen's outing: "Yeah, he pitched well. Had an opportunity there to go to our 'pen, which has been so good. Still in the 60s in his pitch count, but had such a long layoff and us taking the lead in the top of the inning, it set up good for us."

On what happened to Kevin Frandsen when he was picked off third base in the first inning: "Just got a little bit too far off. It's a designed play by them. It's a signal from the catcher to the third baseman, or vice-versa. They threw a ball, kind of an outside slider, that he was able to kind of have some momentum going that way. Just kind of wandered off too far."

On the Soriano pitch to Alonso: "Just a ball up that, he's looking to drive a ball there. Just got it up middle for him. Sori's been really good, so we'll take our chances every day with him and a one-run lead in the ninth. Didn't happen for us tonight."

On the game overall: "We did a nice job coming back in the game. (Andrew) Cashner certainly on a pitch count, being injured, as well. Being sore, as well. We were able to get to (Nick) Vincent there and get a lead, we just couldn't hold it."

On if he sensed a shift after Cashner left the game in the seventh: "Well, yeah. Last time Cash pitched against us we got to him, this time, we didn't. But fortunately for us, in that regard, he was on a pitch count tonight. We took the lead, we just couldn't hold it."

On Desmond's homer: "Yeah, that's hit a long way. It's difficult at night time here to hit a homer. Alonso's the same way. It's difficult to play longball here at night. Much better during the day, but at night, it's very difficult."
