Young hits first spring homer (game update)

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Delmon Young is getting the start in left field today as he tries to win a spot on the Orioles' 25-man roster. May as well make the most of it. Young hit a ball off the scoreboard in left-center field in the top of the second inning for his first home run of the spring. Before today, Young was 8-for-33 with no home runs and one RBI. He was in a 1-for-19 slump before collecting five hits in his last 10 at-bats. Young connected off Rays right-hander Alex Cobb, who was staked to a 2-0 lead on James Loney's two-run shot off Ubaldo Jimenez in the first. Jimenez retired the first two batters before Evan Longoria singled to center and Loney cleared the fence in right. Jimenez threw 16 pitches in the first, 11 for strikes. His fastball was 89-92 mph on the stadium radar gun. Cobb opened the game by striking out Jemile Weeks, Nolan Reimold and Henry Urrutia. He struck out Alexi Casilla and Quintin Berry in the second after Steve Pearce's ground rule double. Update: The Orioles tied the game in the fourth on Henry Urrutia's double to center field, Young's single and Steve Clevenger's double play ball to short. Cobb struck out seven of the first 10 batters. Jimenez escaped a jam in the third after Brandon Guyer and David DeJesus opened the inning with back-to-back singles. He's at 39 pitches, 23 for strikes.
