Nationals closer Matt Capps has been named Major League Baseball's "Delivery Man of the Month" for April after going 10-for-10 in save opportunities. My concern is that Mike Gonzalez will actually become a delivery man if he doesn't stay healthy and start getting guys out. We're told that Gonzalez is pain-free and engaged in a throwing progression program in Sarasota. Once he returns, and we could be talking early June, the Orioles can decide what role he fills. One consideration is how Alfredo Simon is holding up as the closer, if that's what we're calling him these days. Manager Dave Trembley isn't putting labels on anyone. It also could depend on how Koji Uehara is used once he's activated from the disabled list, perhaps later this week. He's scheduled to throw another inning tonight for Triple-A Norfolk. The Orioles' player development staff has named Jake Arrieta and Ronnie Welty as the organization's Pitcher and Player of the Month, respectively, for April. Nick Markakis is batting .429 (18-42) in his last 10 games and leads the Orioles with 13 multi-hit games this season. His five RBIs on Saturday were one more than he totaled in 23 April games. After starting the year 6-for-29 (.209), Markakis has collected 24 hits in his last 67 at-bats (.358). He's reached base safely in 23 of 25 games this season. We can continue to debate whether he should hit second or third (some fans suggest that he replace Jones atop the order.) Just keep that bat in the lineup. After missing four games in April with a quad/hip strain, Miguel Tejada has batted .389 (14-36) with two doubles, two homers, six RBIs and seven runs in the last nine games. I guess that's why he's the cleanup hitter on this team. I've seen Tejada's injury classified as an adductor and abductor strain. Turns out, it's neither one. I'm told that strained quad/hip is sufficient, so that's how I'll describe it. Unfortunately, it's still worth mentioning because Tejada is playing in pain. Ty Wigginton has reached base in 18 of his last 19 games and 21 of his last 37 plate appearances. He's tied for third in the American League with eight home runs, and he owns eight of the Orioles' last 18 homers. Matt Wieters has reached base safely in 22 of 24 games played and has reached base multiple times in 11 of those contests. Jason Berken is tied with the Rangers' Neftali Feliz for the AL lead in lowest opponents' batting average against lefties (minimum 20 at-bats) at .083. Just thought you might be interested.
