Zimmerman singles in first at-bat since July 22 (Nats win 3-2)

The Marlins came out hitting against Nationals right-hander Jordan Zimmermann in the first inning. Christian Yelic and Casey McGehee had early singles and first baseman Justin Bour then slapped a single to right field and for a 1-0 Marlins lead.

The Nationals earned a pair of base hits in the first inning from Denard Span and Jayson Werth, but a double play grounder from Adam LaRoche ended the threat.

Heading to the second, Marlins lead 1-0.

Anthony Rendon and Ian Desmond each had loud outs to center field early in the game, both appearing to travel at least 405 feet before being caught by Marcell Ozuna.

The Nationals grounded into a double play to end the second, but have four hits in the first two frames against Jarred Cosart.

Heading to the bottom of the second, the Marlins lead 1-0.

Update: Reed Johnson doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a pair of errors on the same play. He went to third on a throwing error by Denard Span and then came home on a throwing error by Zimmermann. The Marlins lead 2-0.

Update II: There was a scary moment in the bottom of the sixth when Zimmermann was hit in his right shoulder by a lined shot off the bat of McGehee. Zimmermann went down on his back in front of the mound. Zimmermann stayed in the game but will have to monitor how his shoulder feels tonight and tomorrow.

Update III: Zimmerman and Asdrubal Cabrera had RBI triples in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. Span added a run-scoring single with two outs and the Nationals lead 3-2.

Zimmermann finished six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, with no walks and four strikeouts. He threw 84 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Update IV: Aaron Barrett worked the seventh, Tyler Clippard pitched the eighth and Drew Storen got the last three outs as the Nats won 3-2.

Storen got pinch-hitter Garrett Jones to bounce into a game-ending double play after two singles put runners on the corners with one down.
