NEW YORK - Ubaldo Jiménez is expected to start Sunday afternoon's series finale against the Yankees after the Orioles had listed the spot as TBD.
Manager Buck Showalter wants to give Dylan Bundy extra rest again, pushing back the right-hander to the home series against the Red Sox that begins Monday night.
The choice basically came down to Jiménez or Chris Tillman.
"We've got really only two options there," Showalter said. "Ubaldo's coming off a good start, so it will probably be Ubaldo."
Gabriel Ynoa starts Friday night, followed by Jeremy Hellickson Saturday afternoon.
Showalter still hasn't committed to giving right-hander Miguel Castro a start before the season ends. The temptation is there, of course, but Castro has been one of the most valuable relievers with his ability to come back on limited rest and offer productive innings.
"There's always a chance," Showalter said. "He's doing so well there and serving such a great need. A lot of things like that, especially with a young player, this guy is basically a college senior. He's having his first real success in the big leagues and now all of a sudden you start him and it doesn't work out and then you decide to stick him back down there, is he the same guy going back?
"I think we all know where we'd like for that to end up. Timing is everything with it. It's a possibility. I think it's a when, not if."
Showalter wants to talk more with Castro before offering up too much to reporters. Showalter and pitching coach Roger McDowell have discussed how they want Castro to finish the season, with innings a part of it.
Castro has thrown 57 1/3 innings with the Orioles and 24 1/3 with Double-A Bowie.
"He's getting to an area, the most he's had, so we're trying to keep that in mind," Showalter said. "Also, the stress of those innings, the ups and down. It's a little different as a reliever than it is a starter.
"He's been very resilient, almost to a fault. He presents himself as a guy who would pitch every day, so you've got to get in between he would and should. Should he and would he? This guy would pitch seven days a week if you let him."
Catcher Welington Castillo returns to the lineup tonight after taking a foul ball off his groin region - for lack of a friendlier description - Monday night for the second time this season.
"He wanted to play yesterday, but we thought it was best to wait another day," Showalter said. "Tough guy. He's missed like 18-20 games for different stuff over the course of the year. It's been frustrating for him. He really would have liked to be out there even more. A lot of little nagging things. Nothing major. Tough guy.
"That's what I was thinking last night. To go out there tonight after that's happened a couple times to him. I'm sure that's not the first time. Even (Marcus) Stroman sitting there getting ready to face (Mark) Trumbo and you don't think about it. Even umpires behind the plate. Every time you go out there you've got a chance to have some real physical issues. That ball's traveling real fast."
Rule 5 pick Anthony Santander will play for Salt Lake in the Arizona Fall League. The Orioles had an open spot for an outfielder.
Update: Wade Miley turned in the shortest start of his career, lasting only one-third of an inning and allowing six runs. Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer on Miley's 19 and final pitch.
Update II: Jonathan Schoop led off the top of the fourth inning with his 32nd home run to reduce the lead to 6-1.
Update III: Aaron Judge hit a three-run homer off Mike Wright in the fourth inning to give the Yankees a 9-1 lead.
Update IV: Trey Mancini homered in the top of the sixth inning, but Judge hit a thre-run homer off Richard RodrÃguez in the bottom half and Gary Sánchez followed with a solo shot to give the Yankees a 13-2 lead.
