Notes on Jiménez, Asher, Verrett and more

Ubaldo Jiménez is tentatively scheduled to make his start Sunday afternoon against the Astros in Houston. Whether he actually takes the mound remains in question.

Manager Buck Showalter said he wants to use Thursday's off-day to provide extra rest for his starters, including Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy, which means he won't do much tweaking with the rotation.

"Ubaldo's next start is Sunday," Showalter said, "and we'll see where we are when we get there."

Jiménez is under heavy scrutiny and criticism after his latest abbreviated start last night against the Twins, when he failed to hold a 5-0 lead or retire a batter in the fifth inning. His ERA climbed to 7.17 in 42 2/3 innings.

Alec Asher is a candidate to replace Jiménez if the Orioles make a change in their rotation, but Showalter noted how the right-hander is valuable working in a variety of bullpen roles. Asher is versatile, has options and doesn't need much rest between appearances.

The Orioles contemplated recalling a second pitcher besides left-hander Jayson Aquino, but they held onto Tyler Wilson following last night's appearance. Showalter said Wilson could pitch an inning tonight if needed.

Logan Verrett isn't an option for the Orioles because he's been on paternity leave and hasn't pitched since May 16.

The Orioles will have a pitcher ready in case they need a fresh arm for Wednesday afternoon's game. It's a quick turnaround and they must get someone in place.

Outfielder Michael Bourn no longer is with Triple-A Norfolk - I've been told that he's exercising his opt-out clause - and the Orioles must decide whether to select his contract or let him become a free agent.

I'm assuming that Bourn could decide to stay if there's no major league job. The Orioles would be challenged to find a spot for him with a four-man bench.

Showalter is celebrating his 61st birthday today.

"I'm glad it wasn't yesterday," he quipped.

"Remember when you thought 61 was old? It is."
